About The Position

Our client, a world leader in biotechnology and gene therapy, is looking for an “Scientist” based in South San Francisco, CA. This fully onsite role will work with innovative systems including lung organoids, air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures, co-culture models, and lung-on-a-chip/microphysiological platforms. The role involves developing, characterizing, and qualifying advanced human lung complex in vitro models to support drug discovery, disease modeling, and translational safety assessment.

Requirements

  • PhD in Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Toxicology, or a related field.
  • 0–5 years of post-PhD research experience in academia or industry.
  • Hands-on experience with lung biology, primary lung cells, and/or relevant cell lines.
  • Experience developing or applying lung organoids, ALI cultures, co-culture systems, microfluidic platforms, or organ-on-a-chip models.
  • Strong experimental design, troubleshooting, and method development skills.
  • Experience with advanced molecular, imaging, and functional assay techniques.
  • Strong data analysis, scientific communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in lung biology and immunology.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB for image processing, algorithm development, or large-scale data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, qualify, and implement human lung complex in vitro models for drug development and safety assessment.
  • Culture and characterize primary lung cells, cell lines, organoids, ALI cultures, and microphysiological systems.
  • Design and execute model characterization studies assessing cell viability, morphology, barrier integrity, and functional responses.
  • Apply techniques including qRT-PCR, RNA-seq, proteomics, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, live-cell/time-lapse imaging, high-content imaging, and permeability/TEER assays.
  • Analyze complex datasets and communicate scientific findings to cross-functional teams.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize experimental methods and protocols.
  • Maintain accurate electronic documentation and contribute to study reports, safety assessments, presentations, and publications.
  • Collaborate with teams across Research, Development Sciences, and Translational Medicine.
