Scientist II, Process Chemistry

Revolution Medicines•Redwood City, CA
•$132,000 - $166,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Revolution Medicines is seeking a gifted experimentalist to join its team as a laboratory-based process chemist. The role owns development workstreams for a small-molecule drug substance and independently designs and executes experiments, solves complex chemistry problems, and develops robust processes suitable for scale-up and technology transfer. This is a hands-on individual contributor role responsible for making scientific recommendations and delivering assigned development objectives. The position develops reactions, process steps, or workstreams; evaluates alternative routes; optimizes reactions, workup, isolation, and crystallization; investigates reaction behavior and impurity formation; and establishes process requirements for manufacturing. It also translates laboratory studies into implementation recommendations, prepares technology-transfer procedures, collaborates with external CDMOs, authors development reports and regulatory-supporting technical content, and maintains complete electronic laboratory records. The scientist provides scientific guidance to research associates, presents recommendations to project teams, and identifies and addresses laboratory and process safety risks.

Requirements

  • PhD in organic chemistry and at least 2 years of related experience, which may include postdoctoral research.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute process development studies and solve complex synthetic chemistry problems.
  • Strong hands-on skills in multistep synthesis, reaction optimization, isolation, and characterization using NMR, chromatography, and mass spectrometry.
  • Ability to connect experimental results with process robustness, scale-up considerations, and project objectives.
  • Experience taking responsibility for a defined scientific workstream and providing technical guidance to colleagues.
  • Clear scientific writing and effective collaboration.
  • Proficiency with electronic laboratory notebooks, data analysis tools, and ChemDraw.

Nice To Haves

  • Industry experience in pharmaceutical process development, laboratory scale-up, crystallization, or technology transfer to CDMOs.
  • Experience with design of experiments, automated laboratory reactors, cGMP manufacturing, or drug substance regulatory documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Own development of reactions, process steps, or development workstreams, setting experimental approaches and coordinating work to meet project objectives.
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate alternative routes and optimize reactions, workup, isolation, and crystallization conditions.
  • Investigate complex reaction behavior and impurity formation using mechanistic reasoning, experimental design, analytical data, and relevant scientific literature.
  • Develop robust processes by defining parameter sensitivity, reproducibility, impurity control, solubility limits, and other practical manufacturing requirements.
  • Plan and execute laboratory studies and translate results into recommendations for large-scale process implementation.
  • Prepare technology-transfer procedures and work with external contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) to resolve implementation issues.
  • Author process development reports and technical content supporting regulatory documentation, and maintain complete electronic laboratory records.
  • Provide scientific guidance to research associates and present recommendations to project teams.
  • Identify and address laboratory and process safety risks.

Benefits

  • Competitive cash compensation
  • Robust equity awards
  • Strong benefits
  • Significant learning and development opportunities
