Scientist I

AbbVie•Waltham, MA
•$75,000 - $142,500•Onsite

About The Position

Investigate, identify, develop, and optimize methods and techniques that generate reliable and reproducible data in a timely manner. Read and adapt scientific literature to complete assignments and demonstrate broad, versatile technical expertise within the discipline. The role develops and optimizes analytical methods using separation-based techniques to characterize biopharmaceutical products, interprets experimental results, troubleshoots analytical issues, and contributes primarily through laboratory and/or pilot plant activities. The candidate is expected to work onsite at AbbVie’s Worcester and Waltham sites as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education with typically five years of experience, or a master’s degree or equivalent education with typically two years of experience.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge sufficient to carry out the job functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong understanding of protein biochemistry and analytical method development principles.
  • Experience developing and optimizing charge-variant analysis methods, including icIEF and CEX, and transferring methods to a QC environment.
  • Proficiency operating and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation such as Agilent and Waters HPLC systems, Maurice, and PA800 systems.
  • Experience qualifying and validating analytical methods in accordance with ICH, FDA, and USP guidelines, with methods suitable for late-phase development and regulatory submissions.
  • Experience using automation to standardize high-throughput workflows.
  • Familiarity with statistical tools for data analysis, Empower, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Experience collaborating with process development, quality control, and regulatory affairs teams to align analytical strategies with project timelines and goals.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior scientists and laboratory staff.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design, develop, and optimize robust analytical methods using HPLC, icIEF, and CE-SDS to characterize biopharmaceutical products.
  • Implement and innovate experimental protocols and techniques.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of project goals and proficiency in assigned projects and the overall program.
  • Interpret results from multistage experiments, identify significant deviations, and propose, design, and conduct relevant follow-up experiments.
  • Apply relevant scientific literature and theoretical frameworks to solve discipline-related problems in a timely manner.
  • Perform routine and complex tasks competently and independently, generating reliable and consistent results.
  • Troubleshoot complex analytical issues and implement solutions to improve method performance and efficiency.
  • Contribute to projects primarily through laboratory and/or pilot plant activities.
  • Comply with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies and procedures.
  • Follow corporate standards for conduct, safety, material handling, controlled drugs and radioactive compounds, GxP compliance, and animal care where applicable.
