Scientist 3, Lung Biology & Inflammation

Genentech•Daly City, CA
•$103,400 - $192,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Department of Immunology at Genentech is seeking a driven Scientist with deep expertise in lung biology and immunology to uncover novel therapeutic targets for respiratory diseases. The role leads research projects investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the lung’s response to injury, chronic inflammation, and repair. The Scientist will advance research-stage programs into early clinical development by generating proof-of-concept data, evaluate novel molecules and targeted delivery systems, dissect inflammatory lung disease pathogenesis and therapy mechanisms of action, and explore new biology and pathways for target discovery. The position also involves collaboration across immunology, human genetics, biomarker discovery, and early clinical development, and presentation of research findings at scientific meetings. The role is based in South San Francisco and follows a hybrid schedule, with three days per week on campus. Relocation benefits are available. The expected salary range for the primary location in California is $103,400 to $192,000 USD. Actual pay depends on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other permitted job-related factors. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and company performance.

Requirements

  • PhD in immunology, stem cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated record of high-quality publications.
  • Deep understanding of lung biology, particularly chronic respiratory diseases, tissue remodeling or regeneration, or host-microbe interactions.
  • Strong hands-on molecular biology expertise, including cellular transfections, gene expression profiling, precision genome editing, and targeted RNA delivery technologies.
  • Hands-on experience isolating primary cells from human or mouse tissues, conducting in vitro immunological assays, and performing multidimensional flow cytometry.
  • Ability to independently design, execute, troubleshoot, and interpret complex experiments leading to first-author publication(s) in top-tier journals.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with complex in vitro systems, including airway or alveolar organoids, air-liquid interface (ALI) 3D cultures, or organ-on-a-chip technologies.
  • Experience with targeted therapeutic delivery of nucleic acid modalities such as mRNA, siRNA, or ASOs using viral or non-viral vectors.
  • Experience with computational data analysis, including scRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, or mining public or clinical datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects investigating cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying lung injury, chronic inflammation, and tissue repair.
  • Advance novel research-stage programs into early clinical development by generating robust proof-of-concept data.
  • Use in vitro and in vivo models to evaluate novel molecules and targeted delivery systems.
  • Investigate the pathogenesis of inflammatory lung diseases and identify the mechanism of action of therapies.
  • Drive pipeline research while exploring new biologies and pathways for target discovery.
  • Collaborate across immunology, human genetics, biomarker discovery, and early clinical development.
  • Present research findings at intra- and inter-departmental scientific meetings.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available.
  • A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and company performance.
  • The position qualifies for company benefits detailed at the linked benefits page.
