About The Position

Under the limited supervision of the Science Laboratory Manager, assists with the preparation, set up, break down, and clean-up of the Physical Sciences laboratories according to the type of lab activities and experiments performed using established procedures and in compliance with all safety regulations. This position allows eligible veterans and their spouses to claim Veterans’ Preference pursuant to Florida Statute 295. Certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in the employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled. Requirements

  • Associate degree
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered
  • Three or more years of functional experience in a science laboratory setting that includes the preparation and dilution of chemical solutions as well as hazardous material training.
  • Operational knowledge and understanding in area of responsibility such as chemistry, biochemistry, physics, oceanography, astronomy, earth science, geology.
  • Strong knowledge, understanding and skills in area of responsibility; including an understanding of concepts and principles of related areas and functions.
  • Basic Electrical Safety.
  • Ability to manage own work to job and performance standards.
  • Ability to participate as an active team member.
  • Ability to lead a group of employees.
  • Requires intermediate to advanced knowledge of computer systems, i.e. Microsoft Office Products as well as specialized computer systems.
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate with employee and student populations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares labs according to the assigned functional discipline, such as chemistry, biochemistry, physics, oceanography, astronomy, earth science, geology. Laboratory preparation involves presentation of all materials required for the appropriate activity or experiment, including glassware, benchtop equipment, molecular models, chemical solutions, etc.
  • Assists with preparation, dilution and standardization of chemical solutions, which may include calculating appropriate concentrations, measuring temperature, volume and mass. Weighing, mixing, heating, cooling, and filtration. Dispensing in appropriate containers, and use of equipment such as analytical balances, top loading balances, hotplates, pH meters, multimeters, and spectrophotometers.
  • Returns the lab to the condition present before the day's activities by cleaning and returning all materials, disinfecting surfaces and supplies, and making any minor repairs as necessary.
  • Assists lab manager with gravimetric analysis, determining physical and other properties (such as melting point, boiling point), pH measurement as well as maintaining pH electrodes, calibrating spectrophotometers, and performing titrations.
  • Assists lab manager with maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment applicable to the functional discipline.
  • Dispose of all waste materials properly according to established safety and regulatory protocols.
  • Assists faculty with lab activities.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment to assure safe and reliable operation by cleaning as needed and testing/calibrating before class begins.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
