About The Position

Earthjustice's Washington, DC Regional Office is seeking a fall 2026 science intern. This internship is designed for graduate students who are passionate about environmental justice and a healthy environment. The intern will conduct research on various scientific topics to support Earthjustice's advocacy efforts before federal agencies and courts. The role requires a commitment of 10-15 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. The intern will have the flexibility to work fully remotely from within the U.S. or adopt a hybrid schedule from the Washington, DC office. The DC office focuses on regional issues in the mid-Atlantic states and national environmental concerns, including litigation and advocacy related to air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water protection, energy efficiency, and the transition to zero-emission transportation.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a graduate program with an expected graduation date no earlier than December 2026.
  • Experience with and/or have taken courses on environmental health (e.g., epidemiology, toxicology, human health risk assessment) topics.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite and comfort navigating and learning new tools.
  • Outstanding research skills, including ability to conduct scientific literature reviews and basic quantitative data analyses.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to present complex information to various audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Earthjustice’s values of Justice, Excellence, Inclusion, and Partnership.
  • Must commit to 10-15 hours/week for 10-12 weeks.

Nice To Haves

  • Priority will be given to those with a background in environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, public health, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute comment letters to federal agencies.
  • Develop factsheets for community partners.
  • Write blog posts.
  • Prepare internal memos summarizing research.
  • Engage with Congressional members/staffers.

Benefits

  • Interns at Earthjustice receive an hourly rate that is considered taxable income. The current hourly rate for graduate students is $27.39 and reflects our current fiscal year structure, which will refresh on July 1, 2026, subject to Board approval.
