About The Position

The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Pascal Mubenga, is interested in receiving applications from qualified candidates for the position of: Science Coach (Elementary) TOSA – Department of Science Education. This role involves guiding and assisting elementary science teachers in implementing district-wide science programs, the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS), and effective assessment tools. The coach will collaborate with teachers on standards-based instructional strategies, facilitate science testing support, and provide professional development. Continuous learning in scientifically researched-based best practices and modeling district initiatives are key aspects of the position. The Science Coach will also work with principals and staff on intervention systems and professional development, use data to support teacher planning, and provide content knowledge and resources to staff.

Requirements

  • Hold a Master’s degree.
  • New York State certification in Science or Elementary Education.
  • Minimum of 18 credit hours in science.
  • Three years of teaching and/or coaching experience in an urban school district.
  • Participate in Professional Learning Opportunities.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal communication skills with adults.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in the use of technology.
  • Knowledge of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS).
  • Knowledge of Science assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Guiding and assisting Science teachers in ongoing implementation of district-wide science programs.
  • Guiding and assisting Science teachers in the implementation and transition to the NYSSLS.
  • Guiding and assisting Science teachers in the implementation of valid and reliable assessment tools and planning related professional development.
  • Collaborating with Science teachers in the implementation of instructional strategies that are standards-based.
  • Facilitate building and district-level support for Grade 5 and Grade 8 Science testing.
  • Facilitation of Science-based professional development in the District and Science Department
  • Providing professional development for teachers at grade level meetings, superintendent conference days, etc.
  • Continuous learning regarding scientifically researched-based best practices in Science instruction.
  • Modeling science-based district initiatives in classrooms.
  • Attending district professional development.
  • Ensures the Science Department website is updated with relevant information.
  • Works collaboratively with building Principals and staff in developing and implementing intervention systems and professional development.
  • Use data to assist teachers in planning – assisting in grade-level and departmental meetings.
  • Match instructional support materials to the needs of students.
  • Provide content knowledge and resources to staff on research-based Science instructional practices.
  • Collaborating with department administrators and coaches.
