About The Position

The School Resource Officer prevents juvenile delinquency through close contact with students and school personnel; and informs students of their rights and responsibilities as lawful citizens. The role involves formulating educational crime prevention programs to reduce the opportunity for crimes against persons and property in the schools, and participating in campus activities, student organizations, and athletic events when invited and feasible. The officer will assist in the preparation of response plans and respond to criminal activity in and around the school, make presentations to students in conflict resolution, crime awareness and anger management, and patrol by bicycle. Additionally, the role includes maintaining through observation and the use of speed detection devices, conducting road closures, detaining and testing drivers suspected of driving under the influence, directing traffic at scenes, preparing accident reports, and conducting and preparing investigations of vehicle accidents. The officer will attend/participate in daily roll call including inspection and training prior to going on duty, participate in training programs to improve knowledge and skills, and perform specialized short or long term assignments including administrative, technical and investigative duties as required. The role also involves assisting the public with various traffic related concerns including surveying intersections for new traffic control, and working with the public and civic organizations in conducting community activities. Other related duties are performed as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified as a Peace Officer through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training Council (Georgia POST), with certification active and in good standing
  • Possession of a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of department practices and policies
  • Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems
  • Skill in using computers for data entry
  • Skill in using computers for word processing and accounting purposes
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively

Nice To Haves

  • School Resource Officer (SRO) certification is preferred.
