About The Position

The City of Greer is currently accepting applications for (2) School Resource Officers in our Police Department. This role performs all duties as a Police Officer and specialized activities as a School Resource Officer on a regular basis. The officer will act as an instructor for specialized, short-term programs at all schools and other locations, coordinating activities with school staff and seeking permission before enactment. Responsibilities include developing expertise in presenting various subjects to students, encouraging discussions, attending parent/faculty meetings when requested, and conferring with students, parents, and faculty on law enforcement or crime prevention matters. The officer will become familiar with community agencies that assist youths and their families, making referrals when needed, and informing principals of any necessary law enforcement interviews with students. They will maintain minimal security at schools by taking law enforcement action against intruders and unwanted guests, and maintain detailed records of the School Resource Officer Program. The officer may appear in school hearings for contested expulsions and accompany principals to deliver expulsion documents if the situation is dangerous. Additional duties include working on crime prevention initiatives, conducting security checks, performing general administrative tasks, participating in required training, assisting other officers, staying current on departmental policies, completing work accurately and safely, maintaining equipment, keeping the work area clean, identifying improvements, ensuring professionalism and customer service, demonstrating ethical conduct, supporting a culture of results and collaboration, representing the department at community events, and adhering to the Employee Handbook. This position requires regular, reliable attendance and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience in law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must be currently certified as a Class I officer
  • Must hold required law enforcement certifications.
  • Must possess a valid state issued drivers’ license.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties as a Police Officer and specialized activities as School Resource Officer on a regular basis.
  • Acts as an instructor for specialized, short-term programs at all schools and other locations.
  • Coordinates all activities and programs with the principal and staff members concerned and seeks permission, advice, and guidance prior to enactment.
  • Develops expertise in presenting various subjects to students that include a basic understanding of the laws, role of the law enforcement officer and their duties, etc.
  • Encourages individual and small group discussions with students based upon material presented in class.
  • Attends parent/faculty meetings, when requested by the principal.
  • Confers with students, parents and faculty members in order to assist them with problems of law enforcement or crime prevention nature.
  • Becomes familiar with all community agencies which offer assistance to youths and their families. Makes referrals to agencies when needed.
  • Informs principal of any needed law enforcement interviews to be conducted with students.
  • Maintains minimal security at schools by taking law enforcement action, as required, against intruders and unwanted guests.
  • Maintains detailed records of the School Resource Officer Program on a monthly basis and shall forward same to SRO supervisors.
  • Appears in school hearings as requested in cases of contested expulsions of students; accompanies principal or designee to deliver expulsion documents if situation presents itself as dangerous.
  • Works on crime prevention initiatives within and outside of the schools.
  • Conducts security checks/surveys.
  • Performs general administrative tasks as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, filing records, and answering phones.
  • Participates in required training and continuing education to obtain and maintain certifications and stay current on changes in codes and ordinances.
  • Assists other officers and staff when workload, emergencies, or special assignments require.
  • Stays current on departmental policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Completes work accurately, safely, and efficiently; maintains assigned equipment in good working condition.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area.
  • Identifies and reports suggested improvements or areas of concern to the Supervisor.
  • Ensures professionalism and excellent customer service in all interactions while representing the City of Greer.
  • Demonstrates strong ethical conduct, integrity, and accountability with coworkers, customers, and the community.
  • Supports a culture of results, communication, and professional collaboration within the department and across the organization.
  • Represents the department at community events or meetings when requested by the Supervisor.
  • Adheres to the Employee Handbook and all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Maintains regular, reliable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
