About The Position

The School Nurse monitors the medical needs of students and administers required medications. This role involves developing health care plans for students with chronic health problems and accommodation requirements, as well as administering and/or coordinating screenings (e.g., vision, hearing). The nurse also provides support for staff and students in the health and wellness curriculum. Key responsibilities include ensuring compliance with district procedures, maintaining the school-based health clinic and telemedicine, and providing first aid to ill or injured students and staff. The nurse documents nursing interventions, provides reports, maintains cumulative health records, identifies students with chronic illnesses, and prepares Individual Health Care Plans. Additional duties include monitoring student immunizations, completing injury reports, performing screenings, administering medication, ordering clinic supplies, attending in-service programs, and being capable of securing EMS support.

Requirements

  • Current, valid LPN or RN certification.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the medical needs of students and administer medications required for students.
  • Develop health care plans for students with health problems for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health problems and accommodation requirements.
  • Administer and/or coordinate screenings (e.g. vision, hearing, etc.) of students.
  • Provide support for staff and students in the health and wellness curriculum.
  • Ensure compliance with procedures, protocols, and other instructions provided by the District or Supervisor of Coordinated School Health.
  • Maintain the school-based health clinic and telemedicine.
  • Administer first aid and care to ill or injured students and staff as stipulated by District policies and procedures.
  • Document nursing interventions on computer software.
  • Provide reports as required by Coordinated School Health.
  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students and record data on PowerSchool.
  • Identify students with chronic illnesses, conditions which could result in emergency care and those students who will self-administer and self-monitor medications and/or procedures while at school.
  • Prepare Individual Health Care Plans on those students with chronic illness or that require self-administration and self-monitoring of medications and/or procedures while at school.
  • Assume responsibility for monitoring student immunizations as required by law.
  • Assume responsibility for ensuring completion of student and staff injury reports.
  • Assume responsibility for completion of faculty/staff workers’ comp documentation.
  • Perform vision and hearing screening as needed with appropriate follow-up.
  • Administer medication to students according to District policies and guidelines.
  • Keep principal informed of any health-related issues in the school community.
  • Order supplies for the clinic through the Coordinated School Health Office.
  • Attend nursing in-service programs.
  • Maintain capability of securing EMS support via 911.
  • Assume responsibility for professional growth.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the principal and/or nursing supervisor.
