About The Position

The School Nurse is a registered professional nurse who leads the school community in overseeing school health policies and programs. The role provides expertise and oversight for school health services and health education, delivers health care to students and staff, conducts health screenings, and coordinates referrals to health care providers. The School Nurse also serves as a liaison among school personnel, families, the community, and health care providers to advocate for health care and a healthy school environment. The position establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program; gathers information on students’ health and development; and develops individualized nursing care plans with goals and interventions. It provides nursing care to promote, maintain, or restore health and prevent illness, documents care using a computer program, gathers statistics for district and state records, and supports compliance with Arizona immunization requirements. The School Nurse participates in the Medicaid in Public Schools program, conducts annual vision and hearing screenings and referrals as mandated by the Arizona Department of Health Services, and serves as Employee Health Nurse for staff injuries and illness. The role collaborates with health care professionals and school or district staff, supports wellness through health education, and assesses, plans, and implements school health services. Other duties may be assigned by the supervisor. The role requires a current Arizona Registered Nurse license, current CPR certification, and a valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Arizona or National School Nurse Certification are preferred. Physical demands may include lifting or assisted lifting and moving of school-age children, as well as reaching, standing, walking, stooping, bending, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, and extended periods of sitting or standing.

Requirements

Current Arizona State Registered Nurse License.
Current CPR Certification.
Valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card.
Follow School Nurse policies and practices as dictated by state and district guidelines.
Apply appropriate nursing theory as the basis for decision-making in school nursing practice.
Know federal and state mandates relating to School Health Services and Practices.
Ability to meet physical demands that may include lifting or assisted lifting and moving school-age children, and reaching, standing, walking, stooping, bending, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, and extended periods of sitting or standing.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
Arizona School Nurse Certification or National School Nurse Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

Serve as Employee Health Nurse for staff injuries and illness.
Collaborate with health care professionals within and outside the school district.
Assist students, families, and groups in achieving optimal wellness through health education.
Assess, plan, and implement school health services in collaboration with school and district staff.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
