About The Position

Provides direct health services to students and staff, including emergency care for injuries and acute illnesses. The role involves training and delegating health-related tasks to unlicensed personnel, assisting faculty with chronic condition monitoring, and coordinating care plans for students with conditions like diabetes, seizures, asthma, and allergies. The nurse is responsible for developing Individual Health Plans (IHPs), providing leadership in health services, serving on committees for health accommodations (504 & IEP), and assisting with school emergency response plans. Additionally, the position involves screening and referral for health conditions that may impede learning, promoting a healthy school environment through staff education (e.g., CPR, bloodborne pathogens), monitoring immunizations, and reporting communicable diseases. Health promotion includes direct education to students, guidance on curriculum, awareness activities, and consultation with staff on healthy lifestyles and wellness. The School Nurse acts as a member of the coordinated school health team, a liaison between school, family, community, and healthcare providers, and performs case management through various communication methods, including home visits.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct health services to students and staff, including emergency care for injuries and acute illnesses.
  • Trains and delegates health-related tasks to unlicensed personnel within the scope of practice and state laws.
  • Assists faculty and staff in monitoring chronic medical conditions.
  • Coordinates care and student emergency action plans for chronic conditions and medication use.
  • Obtains parental consent for health services.
  • Develops Individual Health Plans (IHPs) for children with chronic diseases.
  • Provides leadership for the provision of health services.
  • Serves on advisory committees and provides consultation for health accommodations for student education plans (504 & IEP).
  • Assists with the development and training for school emergency response plans.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates response to interventions.
  • Provides screening and referral for health conditions that may be barriers to learning.
  • Promotes a healthy school environment.
  • Provides staff educational in-services (e.g., CPR, bloodborne pathogens, infection control).
  • Monitors immunizations and reports communicable diseases as required by law.
  • Reviews immunization records for compliance with state laws and school policies.
  • Promotes health through direct education to students, guidance on curriculum, and health awareness activities.
  • Consults with school staff regarding healthy lifestyles and staff wellness programs.
  • Serves as a member of the coordinated school health team.
  • Serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and healthcare providers.
  • Provides case management through communication with families.
  • Communicates with community health providers and agencies to promote community health.
