About The Position

Under limited supervision, school nurses promote and maintain the health and well-being of all students and staff. This role involves managing health records, monitoring and treating student health concerns, conducting health screenings, providing emergency care for staff, conducting staff training, and maintaining a professional health room environment. The position requires adherence to workplace expectations, including professionalism, punctuality, and effective collaboration with diverse populations. Qualified applicants must be born-again believers in Jesus Christ, involved with an evangelical, protestant church, and agree with the school's philosophies and statements of faith and Christian life commitment. A commitment to the mission of Christian schooling is also required, demonstrated by eligible children being enrolled in the school.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in nursing supplemented by two years of nursing experience is required and preferred, but an ADN will be considered.
  • Current licensure to practice in the State of South Carolina.
  • Possesses and maintains CPR certification.
  • Able to work general school day hours from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Must be a born-again believer in Jesus Christ.
  • Must be involved with an evangelical, protestant church of like faith and practice.
  • Must agree with the philosophies, Statement of Faith, and Statement of Christian Life Commitment of Southside Christian School.
  • Have a commitment to the mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives of Christian schooling as expressed by Southside Christian School demonstrated by their eligible children enrolled in Southside Christian School.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and review health information on all students, noting significant information, including allergies, medications, illnesses and health conditions.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and confidential health records of students using the computerized Blackbaud school nurse program.
  • Obtain and maintain student immunization records; prepares S.C. certificates of immunization when appropriate documentation is provided under the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with S.C. Department of Health (DPH).
  • Is responsible for the control of communicable diseases and reporting diseases to appropriate health agencies.
  • Utilizes the S.C. DPH childcare and school age children exclusion list to determine when a child needs to be excluded from school.
  • Maintain confidentiality of personally identifiable data on students and staff.
  • Use nursing best practices in the assessment, intervention, planning, and evaluation of student health.
  • Triage, monitor, evaluate, and treat physical/mental conditions of students; refers health concerns to parents as appropriate.
  • Communicate with parents concerning the health of their child(ren); provide recommendation for proper or further medical care as appropriate.
  • Administer prescription and non-prescription medications as directed by the physician and parent, in compliance with Southside Christian policy, and follows protocols for emergency medication.
  • Conduct vision screening as requested by teacher, student and/or parents.
  • Conduct individual head lice screenings on an as needed basis and notify parents according to DPH guidelines.
  • Triage and treat medical/health conditions of staff as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Assist staff with health concerns, as requested.
  • Conduct staff training to promote awareness of illness and disease symptoms; trains staff on use of EpiPen administration, as well as other rescue/emergency type medications.
  • Conduct annual Bloodborne Pathogen training program, CPR, AED, and First Aid training for faculty.
  • Supervise supplying and distribution of first aid kits/ 911 packets to classrooms, offices, etc.
  • Prepare the health room for opening each school year; evaluate use and condition of equipment, furniture, and room.
  • Advise director of needed upgrades, replacement and improvements in keeping with an environment of excellence.
  • Order supplies and provide to areas as needed.
  • Maintain controlled medicines in a secure area and keeps record of disbursement.
  • Communicate with administrative staff regarding staffing in a timely manner, helps in the selection of paid, and volunteers for health room.
  • Keep abreast of developments and innovations in the profession.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgement in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean and professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
  • Have regular and punctual attendance.
  • Partner and work effectively with the diverse cultures or backgrounds of parents, students, and staff population.
