About The Position

The Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is a multi-disciplinary diabetes center affiliated with Children’s Hospital Colorado as well as the University of Colorado School of Medicine. In the pediatric clinic the patient population is primarily children with type 1 diabetes but also includes youth with type 2 diabetes and genetic forms of diabetes. In addition to the clinical program, the Barbara Davis Center has large basic and clinical research programs allowing for many ongoing educational opportunities. This position will provide assistance to the conference coordinator and Clinic Manager for the annual diabetes school nurse conference. The School Nurse Conference Consultant is responsible for working on projects before, during, and after the annual school nurse conference. The consultant will collaborate with conference coordinators and the Colorado Department of Education to develop and moderate an annual school nurse conference, creating educational agendas and clinical discussion topics that address the needs of school nurses and Barbara Davis Center staff. Maintain strong relationships with BDC vendors and external partners to coordinate educational content, provide program updates, and support conference planning throughout the year with an average commitment of 10 hours per month. Within scope of job, this position requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, strong clinical skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action. Must be a strong communicator and willing and able to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of professionals including the BDC Pediatric Director, pediatric physicians, nurse practitioners, school nurses, social workers, nurse educators, outside entities, and volunteers. The position serves as a Diabetes Nurse Educator at the Adjoint Instructor (Clinical Instructor) rank.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree
  • Diabetes Educator licensed to practice in Colorado
  • Experience working with coordinating school nurse conferences
  • A combination of education and related experience may be substituted for the master’s degree on a year for year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with conference coordinator to create an agenda for a school nurse conference; create a topic of discussion for the clinical staff at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes
  • Work directly with conference coordinator to create topics of education with BDC supply representatives
  • Work in partnership with the Colorado Department of Education to discuss the agenda for the nurse conference to be sure the needs of education are met for school nurses
  • Serve as moderator for the school nurse conference as well as address clinical questions from school nurses during the conference
  • Conference planning generally begins in March and the conference is held in the fall.
  • Estimated time of work performed: ~10 hours a month
  • Maintain effective relationships with BDC vendors and all outside entities for the purpose of gathering and disseminating updates related to BDC programs
