About The Position

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an accredited public charter Montessori school and professional learning community in Washington, DC. The custodian is responsible for the cleanliness, sanitation, security, safety, and overall maintenance of the school building, grounds, and equipment. The role ensures the optimal operation of school equipment and maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Requirements

  • Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities or demonstrated commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population
  • Minimum of two (2) years of maintenance experience
  • Must have completed an apprenticeship or the equivalent within the specific trade/craft area
  • Successful applicant will be required to take and pass a drug screening and pre-employment screening
  • Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all employees, vendors, contractors, visitors, and public entities
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions, requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities
  • Ability to initiate and work with minimal direction, self-motivated, reliable, detailed oriented, ability to work safely, with particular attention to the health, safety and wellness of students, staff and visitors; sound judgment and decision-making capabilities are essential
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, a safe driving record, and be able and willing to operate a school owned vehicle
  • Must adhere to all school policies, procedures and protocols, to include, but not limited to, the Employee handbook
  • Must be able to lift, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces
  • Ability to spend most of the workday standing, lifting, and walking
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone
  • Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports, generate service orders, maintain inventories, etcetera

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent preferred
  • Experience working in occupied buildings
  • Experience providing support to a full/occupied building
  • Experience with general plumbing, electrical, and light HVAC
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have a full set of hand tools

Responsibilities

  • Replenishing stock in bathrooms
  • Cleaning restrooms
  • Gathering and emptying trash
  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors
  • Monitoring building safety and security
  • Dusting and washing walls and windows
  • Shampooing rugs
  • Removing rubbish
  • Performing routine maintenance activities
  • Maintaining keys to school building doors
  • Lifting and moving heavy equipment, materials, or objects
  • Cleaning equipment such as computers and tables
  • Shoveling snow and removing ice from walkways
  • Mowing and trimming lawns
  • Raking, piling, and discarding leaves
  • Cleaning chimneys, flues, and pipes with power tools
  • Tending to furnaces and boilers
  • Cleaning snow and other debris from sidewalks
  • Opening the building in the morning
  • Closing the building in the evening
  • Conducting walk-throughs of the interior and exterior premises
  • Ensuring bathrooms and kitchen sinks are in working order
  • Checking and adjusting building temperature
  • Taking notice of and reporting issues to the Director of Operations
  • Ensuring safety measures are taken during inclement weather
  • Applying cleaning chemicals according to safety procedures
  • Adhering to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment
  • Performing minor repair and maintenance as authorized
  • Removing extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior surfaces
  • Advising management on mechanical equipment and building maintenance
  • Performing painting to walls, rails, playgrounds, and other areas
  • Keeping all equipment in good repair and cleanliness
  • Ensuring necessary materials and supplies are stocked
  • Storing items appropriately in designated areas
  • Performing plumbing services for toilets, sinks, and kitchen sinks
  • Performing preventative maintenance and repairs
  • Conducting maintenance work in high-traffic areas before school starts
  • Disassembling defective equipment and repairing or replacing parts
  • Disposing of faulty equipment properly
  • Informing the Director of Operations of needed repairs
  • Climbing ladders to replace light bulbs, fix fixtures, and repair furniture/walls
  • Cleaning up spills, bathroom floods, vomit, and bodily fluids
  • Monitoring water levels in water coolers and replacing jugs
  • Escorting visitors such as postal delivery personnel, maintenance personnel, service technicians, and exterminators
  • Informing the Director of Operations of visitors promptly
  • Initiating maintenance service requests
  • Following through to assure maintenance is performed in a timely manner
  • Maintaining inventory and requesting cleaning supplies and materials
  • Maintaining awareness of energy conservation and making suggestions
  • Securing equipment and supplies and protecting against loss or theft
  • Following Board policies and staying abreast of updates
  • Periodically inspecting facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage
  • Securing the school building at all times
  • Locking, securing, and coding out the building at the end of the shift
  • Verifying that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired
  • Assisting in implementing emergency planning and response
