About The Position

Blackstone Valley Prep (BVP) Mayoral Academy is seeking dedicated team members to join their network of tuition-free public charter schools. BVP is committed to preparing scholars for college and beyond by fostering a diverse and equitable learning environment. This role is a shared position between BVP and the YMCA of Pawtucket, essential for maintaining a clean, safe, and operational school environment. The Custodian will perform a variety of tasks including cleaning, maintenance, and adhering to health and safety standards, with specific physical demands. Approximately 60% of the time will support BVP's PrYde campus at the YMCA, and 40% will support the Pawtucket Family YMCA spaces.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum Intermediate proficiency in English (must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English)
  • Flexibility to work beyond regular working hours as needed
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the Blackstone Valley Prep
  • Must have reliable transportation (mileage reimbursement is available)
  • Criminal Records Check (BCI) showing no disqualifying information in accordance with RIGL § 16-2-18.1
  • Ability to safely operate cleaning equipment and handle chemicals.
  • Knowledge of plumbing, electrical systems, and building maintenance.
  • Ability to perform multiple, non-technical tasks such as operating equipment and adhering to safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to perform fundamental math problems, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios
  • Ability to understand written multi-step procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sound judgment and diplomacy
  • Ability to independently establish priorities and maintain productivity despite numerous interruptions
  • Proven experience in attention to detail and timely completion of tasks and paperwork requirements
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public
  • Effective communication skills for interactions with staff, students, and contractors.

Responsibilities

  • Clean assigned school facilities, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, and other areas.
  • Use brooms, mops, and floor cleaning equipment, vacuum cleaners, and clean and sanitize toilet areas, washrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
  • Arrange furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities, and special events, including setting up, breaking down, lifting, moving, and storing furniture and equipment.
  • Work with the facilities management team to regulate and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and make minor repairs and adjustments to heating & ventilation systems, plumbing systems, and replace light bulbs.
  • Respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns, and maintain a functioning educational environment.
  • Follow all health, safety, and code compliance rules, regulations, and procedures, including components of communicable disease prevention and control plans.
  • Secure facilities and grounds at Blackstone Valley Prep, including locking doors, turning off lights, and ensuring all access, egress points, and windows are secured at the end of each working period.
  • Distribute/replenish supplies and equipment, store cleaning solutions, compounds, and chemicals securely, and notify management of necessary repairs or enhancements.
  • Survey Blackstone Valley Prep facilities for safety, cleanliness, and necessary repairs, and prepare facilities for daily operations.
  • Assist other personnel as needed and communicate job-related issues or concerns to the Dean of Operations, Network Operations, and the Head of School.
  • Uphold cleanliness and sanitation in accordance with applicable guidelines, manage, store and dispose of chemicals and cleaning products safely, and regularly check the school for safety hazards.
  • Organize the custodian's spaces and areas, replenish cleaning and bathroom supplies weekly or as needed, and maintain practices that ensure economical use of resources.
  • As needed, clear snow, leaves, and debris from sidewalks, maintain driveways, parking areas, entrances, and passageways, playgrounds spaces, or school property deemed necessary by the Facilities Management team and post warning signs for hazardous conditions.
  • Provide support for assemblies, meetings, events, and assist with breakfast and/or lunch programs as required.
  • Regularly check the school for safety hazards, and maintain compliance with fire and safety codes, and report any issues.
  • Work in other school buildings, as directed.
  • Relocate, retrieve, and/or deliver furniture, furnishings, supplies, and materials as needed.
  • Report accomplishments, process work requests, and follow established timelines.
  • Raise and lower Federal and State flags at appropriate intervals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, which may include minor pest control, painting, minor carpentry, furniture assembly, emergency assistance, and being exposed to adverse weather conditions and contaminants.
