Works under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor in conjunction with a School Crossing Guard Coordinator to safely assist children and pedestrians crossing streets while traveling to and from school. Assists with traffic only where children or pedestrians are involved. Ensures all traffic has come to a complete stop before children or pedestrians enter the crosswalk or intersection. Enters the street first to gain control of oncoming traffic using a stop sign and whistle, then signals pedestrians to proceed once traffic is controlled. Engages and disengages flashing school zone lights. The schedule is two hours per day while school is in session: one hour in the early morning and one hour in the mid-afternoon. Work is performed outdoors and may involve exposure to changing weather conditions, including wind, rain, ice, and extreme temperatures.
