Controls vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow at school crossings for safety purposes.

Requirements

• Must have High School diploma or its GED equivalent
• Must be of good moral character and reputation
• Background check required

Responsibilities

• Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary
• Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults
• Discourage children from behaving unsafely near traffic, such as darting into the street without looking or crossing against a traffic signal
• Uses existing gaps in traffic to help students cross safely. When the natural traffic flow does not allow enough time for children to safely cross a street, a guard may need to create gaps by stopping traffic temporarily
• Stops traffic with hand signals then verbally directs children to cross the street. A guard is always the first person in the street and the last person out of the street.
• Alert motorists that pedestrians are in the process of using the school crossing
• Observe and report any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard to the school children or the guard to their immediate supervisor
• Cautions drivers of speeding vehicles by use of whistle and/or hand signals
• Records license numbers of vehicles disregarding the school zone speed limit
• Places and removes caution signs and cones
• Performs other related work as required
