About The Position

The City of West Haven is seeking responsible, dependable individuals to serve as School Crossing Guards. This important public safety role ensures the safe crossing of children and other pedestrians at designated school crossings. The Crossing Guard plays a critical role in helping maintain safety during peak school hours and in building trust with the community.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, adults, and the general public.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and work in varying weather conditions.
  • Must pass a background check and be cleared for working near school-aged children.
  • Reliable transportation to assigned post location(s).

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Safely assist children and other pedestrians in crossing streets at designated locations.
  • Monitor traffic and ensure that all vehicles come to a complete stop before allowing pedestrians to cross.
  • Follow established procedures to promote safety and efficiency.
  • Report unsafe behavior or conditions (e.g., reckless driving, missing signage, inclement weather hazards) to appropriate authorities.
  • Maintain a professional and approachable demeanor with students, parents, school staff, and the public.
  • Be punctual and reliable in attendance, especially during school arrival and dismissal times.
  • Wear and maintain city-issued safety gear (e.g., safety vest, stop sign paddle).
  • Remain attentive and focused at all times while on duty.
