About The Position

The School Counselor will promote the school system's counseling program by possessing the knowledge, abilities, skills, and attitudes necessary to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive, developmental, results-based school counseling program. This role provides system support through effective school counseling program management and support for other educational programs, offering direct and indirect services to students. The counselor will provide responsive services through individual and small-group counseling, consultation, and referral skills, and implement the school counseling curriculum using effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured group sessions. The position also involves facilitating the delivery of counseling services through a comprehensive school counseling program, including conducting group counseling/advisement, coordinating with staff for instructional activities, assisting with standardized testing interpretation, and ensuring students receive appropriate career and college readiness advisement. The counselor will consult with staff and parents, promote community resources, advocate for equity, engage in professional development, and apply new knowledge. Additionally, the role requires following professional practices consistent with local school and system policies, interacting professionally with students, parents, and colleagues, being available as per policies, facilitating home-school communication, maintaining confidentiality, working cooperatively with others, modeling correct language use, and demonstrating accurate content knowledge. Compliance with policies and regulations, including timely counseling, supporting student conduct policies, punctuality, maintaining plans, implementing curriculum, keeping accurate records, attending meetings, and adhering to employment contracts are essential. The counselor will act professionally, assume responsibility for the counseling program, protect records and equipment, and supervise students. For students in grades 6-12, the counselor will provide information on postsecondary plans, financial aid, and scholarships, plan and coordinate the advisement program, evaluate transcripts, and conduct exit interviews. The role also includes referring students to support teams and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Hold or be eligible for a Georgia Educator Certificate in School Counseling.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.

  • Must abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to be present at the physical worksite.
  • Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Must perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Promote the school system's counseling program.

  • Coordinate with local school staff to provide supportive instructional classroom activities that relate to student educational, career, and social-emotional needs.
  • Assist with interpretation of standardized group testing.
  • Ensure that all students receive appropriate career readiness advisement.

  • Work cooperatively with school administrators, teachers, other service personnel, and parents.
  • Model correct use of oral and written language.
  • Demonstrate accurate and up-to-date knowledge of content.
  • Conduct counseling activities at the time scheduled.
  • Support policies and regulations concerning student conduct and discipline.
  • Be punctual.
  • Maintain plans as required by school policy.
  • Implement designated counseling core curriculum.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and appropriate records and reporting promptly.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and other assigned meetings and activities according to school policy.
  • Comply with conditions as stated in the individual’s employment contract.
  • Take precautions to protect records, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assume responsibility for supervising students.
  • Provide students with information for postsecondary plans, financial aid, and scholarship information.
  • Plan and coordinate the advisement program for the school.
  • Evaluate transcripts and review records in order to advise students and faculty members about course selections and placement.
  • Conduct an exit interview with students who are withdrawing from school.
  • Follow the system’s procedures in referring students to a local school support team.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
