The School Counselor will promote the school system's counseling program by possessing the knowledge, abilities, skills, and attitudes necessary to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive, developmental, results-based school counseling program. This role provides system support through effective school counseling program management and support for other educational programs. The counselor will provide direct and indirect services with and for students, including responsive services through individual and small-group counseling, consultation, and referral skills. They will implement the school counseling curriculum through effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured group sessions. Additionally, the School Counselor will facilitate the delivery of counseling services through a comprehensive school counseling program, conduct group counseling/advisement with students in educational, career, and social-emotional areas, and coordinate with local school staff to provide supportive instructional classroom activities. The role involves assisting with the interpretation of standardized group testing, ensuring students receive appropriate career and college readiness advisement, consulting with school staff and parents on student problems, promoting the use of community resources, advocating for equity of services, and engaging in professional development activities. The counselor must follow professional practices consistent with local school and system policies, interact professionally with students, parents, and colleagues, be available according to system policies, facilitate home and school communication, maintain confidentiality, work cooperatively with administrators, teachers, and other personnel, model correct language use, and demonstrate accurate content knowledge. Compliance with local school, system, and state policies and regulations is required, including conducting counseling activities as scheduled, supporting student conduct and discipline policies, being punctual, maintaining required plans, implementing designated counseling core curriculum, maintaining accurate records, attending meetings, and complying with employment contracts. The School Counselor will act in a professional manner and assume responsibility for the counseling program by taking precautions to protect records and equipment, and supervising students. For students in grades 6-12, the counselor will provide information for postsecondary plans, financial aid, and scholarships, plan and coordinate the advisement program, evaluate transcripts and review records for course selections and placement, and conduct exit interviews for withdrawing students. The role also includes following system procedures for referring students to support teams and performing other assigned duties.
