About The Position

This is a part-time position at Burton St. Elementary School, with working hours from Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The role involves assisting with all program activities under the direction of the School Age Child Care Director. These activities include arts & crafts, music & drama, games, sports, group activities, science experiments, homework time, character development, teambuilding, KidzLit, and Discovery Learning Centers. Employment is contingent upon meeting NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) licensing requirements, including fingerprinting, background screening, and clearance on child abuse registries. A medical statement and tuberculin test are also required prior to assignment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Substantial experience working with children under 13 years of age.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age (some sites may require 18 years of age).
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Maturity, responsibility, and a sincere interest in working with people.
  • Knowledge of various resources for programming ideas and the skills to utilize that information.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and expectations of children ages 5 to 12.
  • Prior to assignment: Complete an initial medical statement and tuberculin test providing satisfactory evidence of physical fitness for child day care.
  • Within the first 30-days of employment: Undergo fingerprint and background screening as mandated by the NYS OCFS.
  • Within the first 30-days of employment: Obtain clearance on the State Central Register (SCR) and Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCL).
  • Must complete online Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety and Youth Protection Series trainings prior to initial assignment to position.
  • Must hold CPR, AED, and O2 (First Aid may be required at some branches) certifications or successfully complete no later than 30-days after employment begins.
  • Must complete online Hazard Communication training within the first 90-days of employment.
  • Must attend and complete New Employee Orientation (includes Activate America Video 1), Listen First Level 1, and Quality Service Training within the first 90-days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior medical statement and tuberculin test may be accepted if dated within 12-months preceding the date of the application (if previously worked in a Child/Day Care setting).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Site Coordinator in planning and developing lesson plans that include a variety of activities such as arts & crafts, music and drama, games, sports, group activities, science activities and experiments, quiet and homework time, Character Development, teambuilding, KidzLit, and Discovery Learning Centers.
  • Observe and follow the School Age Child Care program guidelines and regulations set by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
  • Greet children and parents by name whenever possible and extend thanks when appropriate.
  • Assist in promotion and leading of the School Age annual family event, including retention initiatives.
  • Report to the program ready to work at designated times and prepared to stay until all children have left.
  • Conduct the program in the Site Coordinator's absence.
  • Perform general housekeeping tasks, clean up after every activity, and ensure that site and program areas are clean and well organized.
  • Provide a safe, healthy, moral, and fun environment for all children.
  • Act as a positive role model for the children in the program through actions, speech, and attire.
  • Foster an environment that includes the YMCA character development values of respect, responsibility, caring, and honesty, and teach skills in team-building, good sportsmanship, friendship, and pride in doing one's best.
  • Provide children with a daily snack that is wholesome, nutritious, and appropriate in proportion and content for the age group, incorporating snack menus into daily lesson plans.
  • Complete accident reports for all injuries or illnesses requiring first aid, discuss incidents with parents, and obtain parent signatures.
  • Maintain a positive, open relationship with staff, parents, program participants, school administration, support staff, and the community.
  • Identify and resolve problems to ensure programs are meeting goals, reporting unresolved issues to the Site Coordinator.
  • Work additional hours when there is a scheduled ½ day of school.
  • Work a ½-day or full day shift when school is closed due to inclement weather or other unexpected reasons and the YMCA Snow Day Fun Club is held.
  • Work during vacation camp on a part-time or full-time basis, depending on need, with a minimum of three shifts required.
  • Hand in completed time sheets on a bi-weekly basis to the Site Coordinator.
  • Follow attendance and call-in procedures, notifying the Site Coordinator when unable to work a shift due to illness, appointments, or vacations, providing sufficient notice.
  • Complete a minimum of 30 hours of training every 2 years, with the first fifteen hours received within the first 6 months of employment, as required by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
  • Attend all staff meetings and training programs.
  • Follow all YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
