About The Position

Greet customers at the Garfield County Landfill in the West Rifle area, inspect loads of trash, make determinations as to any unacceptable items, identify items currently being recycled, weigh vehicles in and out, and direct loads to the appropriate dumping area. This role also handles currency and makes change. The schedule is dependent on seasonal operations, with a Summer Schedule from Friday to Monday and a Winter Schedule from Wednesday to Saturday. This position is eligible for an additional bilingual pay differential.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of landfill or office experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and office equipment, demonstrating fine motor skills for typing, clicking, and manipulating documents.
  • Clear vision for inspecting loads for hazardous items and reading printed and on-screen materials, including text, graphics, and data, and for viewing computer monitors for extended periods.
  • Adequate hearing to engage in conversations, respond to telephone calls, respond to radio communications, alarms, and interact with colleagues in a typical office environment.
  • Maintain the ability to maintain focus, productivity, and attention to detail while working at a desk for standard office hours.
  • Pre-employment background check including Criminal Background Check, Employment Verification, and Motor Vehicle Record.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers at the landfill gate and instruct patrons about landfill regulations and procedures.
  • Enforce policies as needed and communicate to the public the need to comply.
  • Direct customers to the proper unloading area.
  • Inspect loads for unacceptable and/or hazardous items.
  • Report any illegal dumping of hazardous materials immediately to the Supervisor.
  • Direct customers to remove acid cell vehicle batteries from loads and direct the removal of any other items currently being segregated at the landfill.
  • Assess load content and enter vehicle information into the computer.
  • Weigh vehicles in and out, and collect fees.
  • Handle cash transactions, make change, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Record transactions, balance the register, complete daily closeout procedures accurately, and prepare and make the end-of-day deposit.
  • Report fire or smoke on the landfill site immediately to the Rifle Fire Department and Supervisor.
  • Answer the phone and any landfill questions posed by the public.
  • Assist in the inspection of random loads as necessary.
  • Participate in training sessions as state and Federal regulations change.
  • Observe safety precautions and wear appropriate safety equipment at all times.
  • Use and maintain County property in a safe and professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
