About The Position

The Scale Clerk is the first and last point of contact for our customers and drivers at Harmon Scrap Metal, a fast-paced scrap yard focused on efficiency, safety, and treating people right. This office-based position in Columbia, TN, is responsible for weighing trucks, accurately entering tickets, and ensuring smooth traffic flow in and out of the yard. It's a detail-oriented role in a busy environment where accuracy is crucial.

Requirements

• Basic computer skills and ability to learn our scale software
• Good communication skills
• Basic math, account reconciliation, computer, and data entry skills
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
• Ability to work independently, multitask, and have excellent organizational and time management skills
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with customers
• Ability to adapt to frequent changes of priority and complete job tasks safely and effectively
• Ability to learn laws and regulations governing transportation weights and scrap metal purchasing
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum of 3 years previous customer service
• Ability to work standing or sitting for extended periods of time in an office environment
• Ability to occasionally move objects up to 25 pounds
• Ability to perform repetitive motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers

Nice To Haves

• Previous scale house, trucking, or scrap yard experience is a plus

Responsibilities

• Weigh all inbound and outbound loads using the scale system
• Enter customer info, material types, and weights into the system accurately
• Print and process scale tickets and receipts
• Direct drivers where to go and keep traffic moving safely
• Communicate with yard operators and office staff throughout the day
• Answer phones and help customers at the scale window
• Handle payments and balance transactions
• Keep paperwork organized and up to date
• Watch for discrepancies in loads or tickets and report issues
• Follow all safety rules and company procedures
