About The Position

This is an Extra Help Position, which may be part-time or non-permanent, with variable hours depending on departmental needs. This recruitment is for Level I, the entry-level classification in the Scale Attendant series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform routine cashiering duties to determine and collect proper fees at the County’s waste disposal facility. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and complex, with supervision lessening as skills develop. Positions at this level perform duties similar to Scale Attendant II but with less independence and discretion. Work is supervised and follows established procedures, with exceptions explained in detail.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • One (1) year of experience in clerical, retail, or customer service including cashiering responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, County and departmental policies relevant to the area(s) of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health practices related to inspection of waste for disposal.
  • Knowledge of cashiering practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of bookkeeping.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of file and records management.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for record keeping and report preparation.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language.
  • Knowledge of modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions.
  • Ability to operate a large electronic scale, count money, and make change.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to perform data entry and cashier functions.
  • Ability to complete standard report forms.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and record data accurately.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures and standards.
  • Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow-up on assignments.
  • Ability to use tact, initiative, prudence and independent judgment.
  • Ability to assess, analyze, identify and recommend solutions to problems.
  • Ability to effectively use computer systems, software applications and modern business equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Scale Attendant II: One (1) year experience equivalent to Scale Attendant I.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Control traffic into the County’s waste disposal facility.
  • Weigh incoming vehicles using automatic truck scales and record weights.
  • Inspect incoming loads for hazardous and prohibited materials.
  • Determine and collect appropriate fees, issue receipts, and provide correct change.
  • Balance receipts and cash register at the end of each day.
  • Assist the public and provide information.
  • Ensure proper safety procedures and standards are followed.
  • Recommend distribution and sorting of waste materials.
  • Oversee screening of loads to prevent admission of hazardous substances or prohibited materials.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports of cash receipts and waste disposal activity.
  • Verify, balance, and reconcile accounts and records.
  • Prepare and forward billing for credit account customers.
  • Answer public questions and complaints, and direct traffic.
  • Operate a computer and electronic scale.
  • Answer facility phone and two-way radio, take or relay messages.
  • Compose daily tally reports.
  • Collect statistical and regulatory data for compliance reports.
  • Perform clerical duties and routine correspondence.
  • Prepare standard reports associated with landfill and waste diversion.
  • Establish and maintain files, bookkeeping records, and databases.
  • Assist with scheduling coverage for time off requests in the scale house.
