About The Position

This position is responsible for transferring lumber from sawmill stackers and ensuring kilns are loaded according to quality specifications. The role involves operating a forklift to move lumber units, coordinating with the Boiler Operator for kiln loading/unloading, and transporting units to storage areas. During sawmill downtimes, the driver will continue to move wood or clean up the yard. The position requires performing pre-shift forklift checks and maintaining the cleanliness of the forklift.

Requirements

  • Must have excellent hand eye coordination.
  • Use vision/hearing continuously and must have peripheral vision to see forklifts and co-workers.
  • Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, machine specific lockout procedures, monthly safety training, etc.
  • Worker generally works with another clean up member with little supervision.
  • Clean up members must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and make necessary decisions.
  • Constant use of hearing and vision.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling more than 50 lbs.
  • Must use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection).
  • Must be aware of and always communicate with your co-worker (ex: forklift driver).
  • Will be required to read and write during safety training.

Nice To Haves

  • May be required to rotate to different positions for cross-training purposes or to facilitate production.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre shift forklift checks, fill out and turn in check sheet.
  • Transport lumber units from sawmill stackers as production requires.
  • Coordinate with Boiler Operator to load and unload kilns and transport units to appropriate storage area as directed by Boiler Supervisor.
  • Pull tickets off loads going onto the infeed of the kilns.
  • Continue to be productive during Sawmill downtimes by moving wood or cleaning up in the yard.
  • Blow down forklift once a day during winter months, twice during summer months.
  • Keep boards picked up in your area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Remove debris from the work area using a broom, rake, or shovel during down times or between shifts.
  • Keep inside of forklift clean and windows as clean as possible.
  • Help with breaks/lunches for other outside drivers as needed.
