About The Position

As a member of the Smathers Library Collection Services team, the Student Assistant plays a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of library operations. This position focuses on accurately pulling and re-shelving a high volume of circulating materials and performing essential tasks that help maintain the library’s organization and function. The Student Assistant will report directly to the Print Collections Support Personal and assist with various collection-related duties, including participation in Google Books project. Training with library software, Dewey Decimal & Library of Congress classification system, and Smathers Library policies is provided during onboarding.

Requirements

  • Communicative with the Collections Services supervisors regarding scheduling
  • Ability to lift 40 pound boxes and stand on stools and high ladders
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively and cordially
  • Self-motivated and comfortable with a high level of autonomy
  • Basic computer skills: experience with Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Capable of maintaining multiple ongoing projects

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a library or archives
  • Experience with organizing materials in a high-volume setting
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Experience assisting with digitization or special projects, including large-scale processing initiatives such as Google Books
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow established procedures consistently

Responsibilities

  • Accurately pulling and re-shelve circulating library materials, ensuring items are promptly placed in order by the Library of Congress classification system.
  • Shift sections of library materials to new locations, relabel, dust, and block shelves as needed to maintain the library’s organization and cleanliness.
  • Take statistics and record relevant information to track and support library operations.
  • Assist with pulling materials for the Google Books project, ensuring that items match shipment criteria, and reporting any discrepancies or issues to supervisors.
  • Maintains working knowledge of competencies required by the Library of Congress classification system and UF Libraries policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include supporting collection management tasks and assisting with general library functions.
