About The Position

The City of Charlotte's Solid Waste Services Department is now accepting applications for the Sanitation Equipment Operator Associate Apprentice position. Apprentices will receive CDL training through the Solid Waste Safety Division. This one-year apprenticeship program is designed to prepare participants for the role of Sanitation Equipment Operator. Upon successful completion of the program, apprentices will earn a nationally recognized Department of Labor journeyman credential and secure a full-time position with the City of Charlotte.

Requirements

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License

  • Ability to lift and carry 100 lbs
  • Follow written and/or verbal instructions
  • Work assigned shift and may be required to assist in multiple areas
  • Work overtime if needed
  • Work nights, weekends or other unusual hours as needed in support of special events or emergency response
  • Work holidays

Responsibilities

  • Obtain a Class B CDL
  • Operate heavy equipment
  • Read and follow street maps & driving routes
  • Operate a rear-end loading sanitation vehicle
  • Collect residential waste, yard waste, business garbage and other related debris
  • Inspect equipment for readiness and safety
  • Perform manual labor tasks such as, lifting and emptying containers and collecting yard waste
