About The Position

The ʻĀina Stewardship Assistant supports environmental care and restoration efforts along Pālolo Stream. This role focuses on maintaining the stream corridor, documenting field data, and participating in culturally informed stewardship practices. Pālolo Stream, formed by the confluence of Waiʻomaʻo and Pūkele Streams, is a culturally significant landscape featuring a natural streambed, pōhaku, and native species such as ʻOʻopu (Hawaiian goby). Proper maintenance of this area is essential to protecting its ecological health and cultural importance.

Requirements

  • Current Chaminade student
  • Federal Work-Study eligibility through Chaminade
  • 2.0 GPA or higher (must maintain)

Nice To Haves

  • Unfortunately, due to this requirement, Marianist Exchange Program participants from Chaminade's sister universities are ineligible to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Remove ʻōpala from designated areas along Pālolo Stream and transport all waste to appropriate disposal sites.
  • Document data on the volume of rubbish removed and conduct ʻOʻopu counts when assigned.
  • Cut back haole koa and other overgrown vegetation to maintain safe and accessible pathways.
  • Relocate green waste and plant material to approved areas along the outer edges of the stream bank.
  • Support the protection of natural stream features, including pōhaku and native aquatic species.
  • Participate in cultural and place-based learning activities related to Pālolo Stream and its moʻolelo.
  • Assist with coordinated workdays involving community organizations such as Nā Wai Ekolu and Sustainable Coastlines.
  • Adhere to established environmental and cultural stewardship practices to ensure responsible care of the ʻāina.
