About The Position

Georgia-Pacific’s Toledo, OR Containerboard facility is seeking a qualified Safety Specialist to join our team. This role will create value by assisting in development, implementation, and maintenance of the facility’s safety programs. This person will provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, training, and development to advance the overall company safety environment and performance. This position will support and manage occupational safety improvement efforts at the site. The Safety Specialist position reports directly to the site Safety & Health Manager. This role will also include working directly and indirectly with the site leadership team in identifying safety improvement opportunities, including critical hazard risk reduction efforts, and improving Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) integration. Supporting the leadership team towards our vision of achieving ZERO significant incidents is a critical requirement for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or higher in an Environmental Health and Safety field of study OR Four (4) or more years of experience in a safety leadership and management role
  • Experience and Knowledge of federal/state safety regulatory requirements
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, WORD, Power BI)

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certifications
  • Experience with safety management in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in manufacturing, pulp and paper, or chemical facility
  • Experience establishing sustainable systems for safety, compliance, and continuous improvement
  • Knowledge of occupational safety management and ability to apply and achieve results

Responsibilities

  • Manage competing demands which requires a strong systems approach to work, strong organizational skills, teamwork, and the ability to establish, communicate and adhere to priorities
  • Primary areas of responsibility include contractor safety management, machine guarding, walking and working surfaces, MOPED, Save My Life permitting, ergonomics, and hearing conservation.
  • Design, implement, and lead safety programs, compliance strategies, and management systems
  • Prepare and conduct regulatory training and work with facility personnel to increase awareness of safety improvement needs
  • Perform ongoing evaluations of site safety programs facility-wide
  • Assist in preparation of business/corporate-sponsored safety strategies, recommendations, and reporting
  • Participate in and/or lead Operational Learning Team sessions which are based on Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) models aimed at better identifying and implementing improved safeguards (failing safely)
  • Respond to site personnel needs for assistance and support on safety-related issues
  • Assist with the development of site Safety Improvement Plans (SIPs) aimed at ensuring systems are put in place to successfully execute the Path to Zero safety strategy
  • Plan, promote, organize, direct, and audit safety related activities in field
  • Provide leadership to mill critical hazard related safety teams and Compliance System Owners (CSOs) to ensure maximum value creation
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for large and small mill projects, ensuring compliance with all applicable safety requirements and applying Prevention through Design (PtD) principles
