About The Position

Mountains Behavioral Health is seeking a full-time Safety Specialist to promote and maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff. This role involves conducting proactive safety rounds, assisting clinical staff with patients exhibiting aggressive behaviors using de-escalation techniques, and partnering with Public Safety and Safety Technicians to ensure a secure treatment environment. The Safety Specialist will also initiate debriefing sessions after seclusion and restraint incidents and document patient safety encounters.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • 2 years of relevant experience and skill in verbal and physical de-escalation in an acute psychiatric setting.
  • Previous work experience in health care.
  • Psychiatric work experience.
  • Training in de-escalation and aggression management in healthcare settings.
  • BLS required or attained within 1 month of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff.
  • Conduct proactive and continuous safety rounding in patient care areas.
  • Identify and communicate potential safety risks to clinical staff.
  • Assist clinical staff with interventions for patients demonstrating escalated, threatening, or aggressive behaviors.
  • Utilize evidenced-based de-escalation and aggression management techniques.
  • Assist in physical restraint techniques when necessary, adhering to policies and training.
  • Initiate debriefing sessions and provide feedback after seclusion and restraint situations or crises.
  • Partner with Public Safety and Safety Technicians to monitor and maintain a safe treatment environment.
  • Intervene during escalating situations to reduce the likelihood of physical altercations.
  • Assess for changes in patient behaviors and provide early intervention.
  • Document patient/family safety encounters in the medical record.
