About The Position

Mountains Behavioral Health is seeking a full-time Safety Specialist to promote and maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff. This role involves conducting proactive safety rounds, assisting clinical staff with de-escalation techniques for patients exhibiting aggressive behaviors, and partnering with Public Safety and Safety Technicians to ensure a secure treatment environment. The specialist will also be responsible for assessing patient behaviors, intervening in escalating situations, and documenting safety encounters.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent required.
2 years of relevant experience and skill in verbal and physical de-escalation in an acute psychiatric setting required.
Previous work experience in health care required.
Psychiatric work experience required.
Training in de-escalation and aggression management in healthcare settings required.
BLS required or attained within 1 month of hire.

Responsibilities

Serve as a safety expert in patient care areas, adhering to established safety policies, procedures, and standards of care.
Perform continuous safety rounds in patient care areas and proactively identify and communicate potential safety risks to clinical staff.
Develop supportive interpersonal relationships with patients in accordance with treatment plan goals.
Respond to staff requests for assistance with patients demonstrating escalated, threatening, or aggressive behaviors.
Demonstrate expertise in the application of de-escalation techniques and interventions.
Assist in physical restraint techniques necessary to control violent, combative patients, adhering to age-specific competencies and guidelines.
Initiate debriefing sessions and provide feedback to staff after seclusion and restraint situations and any crisis.
Partner with Public Safety and Safety Technicians in monitoring and maintaining a safe treatment environment.
Intervene during escalating situations applying skills and expertise to reduce the likelihood of physical altercations.
Assess for changes in patient behaviors and provide assistance with early intervention.
Document patient/family safety encounters in the medical record/progress note.
Perform other duties as required.
