About The Position

Mountains Behavioral Health is seeking a full-time Safety Specialist to promote and maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff. This role involves conducting proactive safety rounds, assisting clinical staff with de-escalation techniques for patients exhibiting aggressive behaviors, and partnering with Public Safety and Safety Technicians to ensure a secure treatment environment. The specialist will also be responsible for assessing patient behaviors, intervening in escalating situations, and documenting safety encounters.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • 2 years of relevant experience and skill in verbal and physical de-escalation in an acute psychiatric setting required.
  • Previous work experience in health care required.
  • Psychiatric work experience required.
  • Training in de-escalation and aggression management in healthcare settings required.
  • BLS required or attained within 1 month of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a safety expert in patient care areas, adhering to established safety policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Perform continuous safety rounds in patient care areas and proactively identify and communicate potential safety risks to clinical staff.
  • Develop supportive interpersonal relationships with patients in accordance with treatment plan goals.
  • Respond to staff requests for assistance with patients demonstrating escalated, threatening, or aggressive behaviors.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the application of de-escalation techniques and interventions.
  • Assist in physical restraint techniques necessary to control violent, combative patients, adhering to age-specific competencies and guidelines.
  • Initiate debriefing sessions and provide feedback to staff after seclusion and restraint situations and any crisis.
  • Partner with Public Safety and Safety Technicians in monitoring and maintaining a safe treatment environment.
  • Intervene during escalating situations applying skills and expertise to reduce the likelihood of physical altercations.
  • Assess for changes in patient behaviors and provide assistance with early intervention.
  • Document patient/family safety encounters in the medical record/progress note.
  • Perform other duties as required.
