About The Position

The Safety Specialist will be responsible for the safety and reliability activities of an avionics program related to the flight control system. They will ensure that the system architecture and controllers meet the safety and certification objectives defined by the authorities (CS/FAR XX.1309, Part 21, Part 23). The incumbent will be responsible for demonstrating to our various clients that the practices of ARP4754a/61 are met. Thales people architect solutions that enable two-thirds of planes to take off and land safely. We create in-flight entertainment systems that engross 50 million fliers every year and we develop the avionics that control the world’s largest commercial aircrafts. Our simulators train the next generation of pilots for fighter jets, transporters and search and rescue helicopters. And, together, each and every member of our aerospace team makes a difference. The Avionics office in Marie-Curie, Montreal is Thales Group’s Centre of Competence for business and regional jet flight control systems is located at our Montreal – Marie Curie office. The team designs and integrates avionics suites, fly-by-wire flight control systems, SATCOM systems and other innovative concepts for the regional and business aircraft markets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 1 year of professional experience.
  • Knowledge of aerospace standards
  • Experience in the design and certification of embedded equipment and systems.
  • Experience in the safety and reliability of embedded equipment and systems.
  • Spoken and written English (able to write reports and communicate effectively)
  • Able to interact effectively with clients and suppliers.
  • Able to express ideas and simplify information, both orally and in writing.
  • Good team spirit.
  • Effectively organize work autonomously.
  • This position requires a good knowledge of English for writing technical documents, for interacting, supporting and/or providing services to international clients, employees and/or partners as well as foreign government authorities who do not speak French.
  • All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access including eligibility to the Canadian Controlled Goods Program.

Responsibilities

  • Safety and reliability assessment (PSSA / SSA, FMEA, FTA and CMA) of flight control systems and controllers (software and hardware) in accordance with ARP4754 / 61 practices
  • Defines, negotiates, and shares safety and reliability objectives and methods with the rest of the team, clients, and partners.
  • Prepares, presents, and defends the safety and reliability plan to our clients.
  • Architecture definition: Participates in architecture choice workshops at the beginning of the project.
  • Identifies and formalizes safety and reliability requirements through specification documents.
  • Participates in the validation of requirements and supports the verification process.
  • Provides expertise to other Thales entities and its partners.
  • Represents Thales in various international standardization committees such as (ASTM & EUROCAE).
  • Conducts safety and reliability assessment of concepts defined during the research phase.
  • Evaluates safety and reliability activities during the bidding phase.
  • Presents and explains the reliability and safety aspect to an audience not initiated in safety and reliability aspects.
  • Acts as an expert for safety and reliability aspects during reviews by the Thales incident committee.
