About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applications for Safety Specialist, Administrative Services. This position reports to the Occupational Safety Program Manager and plays a key role in advancing a culture of health and safety at UNLV and Nevada State University. The Safety Specialist functions as both a proactive educator and a technical expert in occupational safety, responsible for identifying hazards, developing preventive strategies, and working with various stakeholders to ensure compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements. The role involves leading comprehensive and recurring inspections of campus buildings, shops, and various worksites to identify potential or existing safety and health hazards, including detailed documentation and close coordination with departments for timely implementation of corrective actions. Beyond core inspection duties, the Safety Specialist provides essential support in specialized and administrative areas to strengthen the occupational safety program, including assisting with program development, contributing to training initiatives, and supporting safety-related projects. As a subject matter expert, the Safety Specialist serves as a vital resource to the campus community, offering guidance, answering safety-related inquiries, and advising on best practices. With management approval, the Safety Specialist may identify and recommend necessary safety-related purchases and coordinate with vendors for proper calibration and maintenance of monitoring equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience conducting safety inspections with a focus on hazard recognition and prevention.
  • Experience performing comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Experience developing practical, effective solutions to mitigate safety and health risks across various workplaces.
  • Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.

Nice To Haves

  • CHST or OHST certification
  • OSHA 10-hour General Industry or OSHA 10-hour Construction course completion card
  • Knowledge of OSHA and ANSI standards and their application to university settings.
  • Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Nevada Revised Statues (NRS) and Nevada Administrative Code (NAC).
  • Knowledge of how to use specialty equipment such as gas meters, light meters, and noise dosimeters.
  • Awareness of university structure, departments, safety policies and procedures.
  • Awareness of ADA accessibility requirements.
  • Familiarity with the CHIMERA inspections platform.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems.
