About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is seeking a Safety Specialist for Administrative Services. This role reports to the Occupational Safety Program Manager and is crucial in fostering a health and safety culture at UNLV and Nevada State University. The Safety Specialist acts as both an educator and technical expert, identifying hazards, creating preventive strategies, and ensuring compliance with institutional policies and regulations. Key responsibilities include conducting comprehensive inspections of campus buildings, shops, and worksites to identify safety and health hazards, documenting findings, and coordinating corrective actions with departments. The position also supports program development, training initiatives, and safety-related projects. As a subject matter expert, the Safety Specialist provides guidance and advice to the campus community on best practices for a safe working and learning environment. Additionally, with management approval, the role may involve recommending and purchasing safety equipment and coordinating its calibration and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience conducting safety inspections with a focus on hazard recognition and prevention.
  • Experience performing comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Experience developing practical, effective solutions to mitigate safety and health risks across various workplaces.
  • Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.

Nice To Haves

  • CHST or OHST certification
  • OSHA 10-hour General Industry or OSHA 10-hour Construction course completion card
  • Knowledge of OSHA and ANSI standards and their application in university settings.
  • Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Nevada Revised Statues (NRS) and Nevada Administrative Code (NAC).
  • Experience using specialty equipment such as gas meters, light meters, and noise dosimeters.
  • Awareness of university structure, departments, safety policies and procedures.
  • Awareness of ADA accessibility requirements.
  • Familiarity with the CHIMERA inspections platform and learning management system.

Responsibilities

  • Lead comprehensive and recurring inspections of campus buildings, shops, and various worksites to identify potential or existing safety and health hazards.
  • Document inspection findings and coordinate with departments to ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
  • Assist with occupational safety program development.
  • Contribute to safety training initiatives.
  • Support safety-related projects.
  • Serve as a resource to the campus community, offering guidance and answering safety-related inquiries.
  • Advise on best practices to maintain a safe working and learning environment.
  • Identify and recommend necessary safety-related purchases (with management approval).
  • Coordinate with vendors to ensure proper calibration and maintenance of occupational safety and health monitoring equipment.
