About The Position

A Patient Safety Monitor, also known as a Patient Observer, is a caregiver who provides patients requiring supervision with companionship and care. This role serves as a compassionate alternative to restraints or seclusion rooms for managing challenging patients. Under the guidance of clinical staff, Patient Safety Monitors are stationed in the patient's room to maintain constant visual observation. They are responsible for listening to patients' concerns about their well-being or worsening symptoms and relaying this information to the appropriate nurse for further action. The role focuses on providing care that soothes patients, observing for changes in their condition, and alerting nursing staff when necessary. Patient Safety Monitors are expected to refrain from performing unauthorized duties.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3+ months in a customer service related position with proven, effective communication skills at various social levels.
  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Outstanding communication, listening and observation skills.
  • Ability to work well together with others.
  • Professional appearance and proficient personal hygiene.
  • Calm, confident manner.
  • Undeterred by distressed or combative patients.
  • Ability to make immediate decisions, while maintaining composure, in emergency response situations.

Responsibilities

  • Observes 1:1 patient watches for any behavior that could indicate potential problems for patient or staff.
  • Remains alert at all times while on duty, ensuring supervision of patient at all times.
  • Observes room for safe environment for behavioral health patients, visitors & staff.
  • Monitors overall safety of patient.
  • Immediately reports any changes in patient behavior to clinical staff / RN in charge of the Patient.
  • Provides patients with emotional support.
  • Alerts nursing staff when patients need help.
  • Handles sensitive, private information with a high level of discretion, maintaining confidentiality of patient information.
  • Make immediate decisions, in emergent response situations, while maintaining composure.
  • Maintains routine patient watch logs.
  • Communicates effectively at various social levels.
