About The Position

Pillar Innovations is seeking a Safety Manager for its manufacturing facility in Grantsville, MD. This role is hands-on, requiring the individual to be actively involved on the shop floor rather than desk-bound. The Safety Manager will oversee the safety program for the fabrication, assembly, and panel shops, working closely with welders, fitters, machinists, assemblers, panel builders, and painters. The position involves coaching, training, hazard identification, and fostering a strong safety culture where employees feel empowered to stop work if necessary. Key activities include leading weekly safety meetings, conducting hands-on training, performing monthly facility audits, and collaborating with production supervision to address safety issues such as machine guarding, lockout/tagout, hot work, rigging, electrical safety, and exposure to welding fumes and coatings. The role also involves maintaining documentation like audit records, OSHA recordkeeping, training logs, permits, and incident investigations. The Safety Manager will represent the company's safety program to customers and third-party auditors. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of OSHA General Industry regulations as they apply to fabrication and manufacturing, along with knowledge of environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, and housekeeping best practices. Influence and interpersonal skills are crucial for success in this role.

Requirements

  • 5+ years’ experience in an active safety or compliance role, fabrication, manufacturing, or heavy industrial experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Completion of a thorough background and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Employees are required to participate in random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing as requested.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or Management or equivalent education, training, and/or experience preferred
  • Certificate in GSP (Graduate Safety Practitioner), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), ASP (Associate Safety Professional), or OHST (Occupational Health and Safety Technologist) preferred
  • Completion of instructor certifications such as OSHA 501, OSHA 511, powered industrial truck and overhead crane/rigging train-the-trainer, First Aid/CPR/AED instructor, MSHA Part 46/48 Trainer Card, etc. preferred

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and train shop personnel, and encourage safe work through positive relationships, to ensure best safety practices throughout the fabrication facility and the Company
  • Lead weekly safety meetings for facility personnel
  • Conduct powered industrial truck (forklift) operator training and evaluations, and maintain current operator certification and evaluation records
  • Ensure and enforce that employees follow company, customer, and regulatory agency safety policies and procedures through daily shop floor presence, communication, and education, and document and report Company and employee safety practices and deficiencies
  • Identify and correct deficiencies in safety practices on the shop floor, and work with the production team to develop practical solutions to hazards and safety concerns
  • Perform and document monthly facility safety audits covering work cells, welding and cutting areas, blast and paint areas, material storage and racking, mezzanines, and the yard, and track findings to closure
  • Teach or instruct hands-on safety classes in the shop or classroom
