About The Position

The Safety Manager is the safety authority on this site, reporting to the site manager for day-to-day work and to Slater's corporate HSE lead independently. This role has stop-work authority that does not run through the project chain, and no one on the job can override the Safety Manager on schedule grounds. The position involves managing the site safety program, including orientation, toolbox talks, job hazard analyses, and incident investigation. It also includes overseeing the owner's behavioral safety observation program, ensuring subcontractor safety compliance, managing traffic control, and implementing heat illness prevention and dust exposure monitoring. A key responsibility is emergency response and coordination with plant security. Additionally, the Safety Manager will conduct weekly drone flights for aerial photo and video documentation of progress, adhering to strict no-fly zones.

Requirements

  • 7+ years in construction safety.
  • 3+ years as the lead safety professional on a site of comparable size.
  • CHST or CSP certification in hand at hire.
  • OSHA 30.
  • OSHA 500 trainer authorization, or willingness to earn it within the first 120 days.
  • FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate, or willingness to earn it within 30 days of starting.
  • Experience enforcing an owner's safety program.
  • Demonstrated judgment and the resolve to stop work when necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work on a large utility or power generation site, especially with an owner-run behavioral safety program.
  • Coal ash, power generation or demolition experience.
  • Certified Utility Safety Professional.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the site safety program: orientation, toolbox talks, job hazard analyses, incident investigation.
  • Oversee the owner's behavioral safety observation program on site, including observation quotas, coaching, and trend reporting.
  • Ensure subcontractor safety compliance, including supplying protective equipment.
  • Coordinate traffic control where equipment meets truck and pedestrian traffic.
  • Implement heat illness prevention and dust exposure monitoring and respiratory protection.
  • Manage emergency response and coordination with plant security.
  • Conduct weekly drone flights for aerial photo and video documentation of progress, adhering to strict no-fly discipline around the substation.
