About The Position

Property Management Services at Auburn University is seeking a Safety & Health Specialist to provide professional expertise in environmental, safety, and health programs. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, national consensus standards, and Auburn University's Safety Policy. Specializations may include Biological Safety, Hazardous Materials, Fire Protection, Indoor Air Quality, and Occupational Safety.

Requirements

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Level I: High school diploma or equivalent + 8 years of experience OR Bachelor's degree.
  • Level II: High school diploma or equivalent + 8 years of experience OR Bachelor's degree + 2 years of experience OR Master's degree.
  • Level III: High school diploma or equivalent + 8 years of experience OR Bachelor's degree + 4 years of experience OR Master's degree + 2 years of experience.
  • Experience in health and safety regulatory compliance enforcement.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations, including OSHA standards and University safety policies.
  • Conducts regular safety inspections of residence halls to identify potential hazards.
  • Implements safety and health programs for Property Management staff, such as Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Fall Protection.
  • Develops and maintains safety protocols and policies for Property Management staff.
  • Oversees the development and management of industrial hygiene programs, analyzing and controlling occupational hazards and diseases, and determining safe limits for materials or conditions.
  • Determines proper safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed for Property Management staff.
  • Performs and maintains a chemical inventory of all chemicals used by Property Management and regularly updates Safety Data Sheet books.
  • Develops and delivers occupational safety and health training to all Property Management staff.
  • Coordinates training opportunities delivered by experts in different fields.
  • Trains Resident Assistants on fire prevention and fire extinguisher use.
  • Responds to work orders from students and parents regarding indoor air quality in residence halls.
  • Identifies areas of microbial growth in residential areas, determines causes, and develops remediation plans.
  • Responds to water events in buildings, creates moisture maps, and determines fan and dehumidifier placement to expedite drying and prevent microbial growth.
  • Works with contractors to ensure proper repair of areas damaged by water and microbial growth.
  • Works closely with the University Risk Management and Safety department for a unified approach to campus safety and health.
  • Collaborates with the University Industrial Hygienist on issues affecting Property Management facilities, residents, and staff.
  • Participates in cross-departmental groups to enhance campus safety and health training and awareness.
  • Maintains up-to-date records of inspections, audits, and safety training.
  • Provides updates on safety and health issues to senior management and relevant stakeholders.
  • May supervise Safety & Health Tech, though supervision is not the main focus.
