About The Position

This role involves consulting and advising management and employees on occupational hygiene and safety programs, relevant policies, and legislation. The Specialist will coordinate and deliver training, manage safety-related upgrades, organize wellness programs, and analyze trends to develop action plans for reducing incident frequency and severity. Responsibilities include investigating accidents, implementing health, safety, and environmental policies, managing job functional analysis and ergonomic assessments, conducting safety audits, and coordinating environmental tracking and reporting. The position also involves claims management, including Workers Compensation and Return to Work programs, and acting as a Management Certified Member and Co-Chair for the Safety Committee. Ensuring compliance with legal requirements under various acts and codes, accompanying government inspectors, and being on call for emergencies are also key aspects. The role requires working with contractors to ensure safety compliance and involves statistical recordkeeping and reporting. Additionally, the Specialist will initiate safety talks, attend supervisor meetings, create safety campaigns, coordinate ergonomic assessments, ensure environmental testing is performed, develop a Sustainability Plan, collaborate with other H&S specialists, and gather statistics for corporate reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an occupational or environmental health science degree or field.
  • 3+ years of experience working in Health & Safety.
  • 1-2 years’ experience with sustainability and environmental protocols.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing facility

  • Demonstrated initiative in proactively identifying future potential safety risks and suggesting or implementing appropriate solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Consults and advises management and employees and safety committees on occupational hygiene and safety programs, relevant policies and legislation
  • Co-ordination and delivery of training to hourly employees
  • Coordinating safety related upgrades/changes with the Manufacturing Engineering group
  • Organizing Wellness programs such as annual Flu Clinics, lunch & learns, smoking cessation programs, etc.
  • Identification and analysis of trends and development of action plans to reduce frequency and severity
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Implements and maintains all Health & Safety / Environmental policies and procedures as per the OSHA and other Federal/State regulations or internal requirements.
  • Manage and develop Job functional analysis descriptions and perform Ergonomic analysis in conjunction with Manufacturing Engineer team.
  • Coordinate, conduct safety audits and create action plans to address audit findings.
  • Coordinate all Environmental tracking and partner with all agencies to complete the required reporting.
  • Claims Management
  • Management of Workers Compensation claims and management of cases.
  • Management of Return to Work programs and offers of modified work.
  • Educating supervisors on safe return options for modified work.
  • Safety Committee Act as Management Certified Member, Co-Chair, and take minutes
  • Work with members to build a strong committee and create an overall culture of working safely with every employee
  • Schedule training/retraining for committee members
  • Participate in Safety Committees outside the Company.
  • Ensuring facility meets the legal requirements under the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Reg.851, Fire Code, Building Code, CSA Standards, etc.
  • Working with and supporting production supervisors to ensure compliance
  • Accompanying government inspectors (OSHA, Fire,etc) during unplanned audits and addressing orders/issues raised by them, if any
  • On call 24/7 for emergencies and plays a key role in an emergency (serious injury or death and in a disaster such as a fire, tornado or other natural disaster)
  • Work with maintenance (and other HPS employees that hire contractors) to ensure any contractors working on HPS property work safely and in accordance to their respective legal obligations.
  • Statistical recordkeeping and reporting
  • Initiating safety talk sessions for monthly team meetings
  • Attending weekly supervisor meetings to discuss safety topics and campaigns.
  • Creation and promotion of safety campaigns on relevant topics.
  • Includes ensuring PDA’s are up to date
  • Coordination and completion of ergonomic assessments as required.
  • Ensure all Environmental testing (air quality, noise levels) is performed as required and the results are presented as required by law.
  • Develop a Sustainability Plan in conjunction with Manufacturing Engineers and Maintenance and support the Ecovardis reporting.
  • Collaborate with the other H & S specialists in other HPS locations on how to address safety issues and share best practices.
  • Gather Health & Safety statistics from each location to combine into corporate report for senior management and board of directors.
