Our agency houses many public safety divisions, including Emergency Management, Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Samarcand Training Academy, and the North Carolina National Guard. DPS Central Human Resources is now accepting applications for a Safety Director II to join our Health, Benefits and Safety Unit in Raleigh, NC. The primary purpose of the Safety Director II position is to oversee the compressive safety, occupation and environmental health programs for the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The employee in the position must assess the status of DPS safety, occupational and environmental health programs, policies and procedures on a continuous basis, ensuring compliance requirements are met and/or improvements are made. Additionally, the Safety Director II is responsible for developing and implementing a strategy for continuous improvement initiatives and implementation of new compliance programs within the agency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety management, occupational safety, industrial technology or one of the physical sciences from an appropriately accredited institution from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of four years of progressive occupational safety and health experience; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license must be obtained by date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing the agency’s occupational safety and environmental health programs, policies and procedures on a continuous basis and comparing them to programmatic benchmarks.
  • Drafting agency safety policies, safety programs and safety training for review by agency.
  • Managing four (4) direct reports and overseeing staff who conduct needs assessment for the agency’s program.
  • Functioning as the agency’s ultimate authority for providing safety, occupational and environmental health guidance, instructions and answers.
  • Providing consultation and advice to agency personnel and units on regulatory requirements for the purchase of safety equipment, safety services, safety training and other safety-related issues as requested or warranted.
  • Reviewing solutions and corrective actions recommended to appropriate management personnel for abating all hazards identified through these various inspection venues.
  • Managing, participating in, and providing oversight for follow up on inspections, regulatory enforcement and penalties by OSHA, Dept. of Insurance, local Fire Marshals, Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Health Hazards Control Branch, Dept. of Labor and insurance carrier boiler inspections, and EPA waste regulations enforcement.
  • Providing safety consultations for facilities, offices, operations or programs when they are added, expanded, relocated or changed and suspected hazards come into the environment.
  • Ensuring that all serious accidents and injuries to staff, visitors and juveniles are investigated in a timely manner to determine root cause; making recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
  • Developing and implementing Safety and occupational health policies on a statewide basis to satisfy agency needs or federal, state and local regulations.
  • Ensuring that required training, which impacts the agency statewide, is developed and delivered to divisions or regions to communicate procedures and requirements regarding a broad range of safety and occupational health related topics.
