About The Position

The Shift Safety Coordinator supports the safety program on the production floor by ensuring safe work practices, coordinating daily safety activities, addressing hazards in real time, and reinforcing compliance with company policies, OSHA (or local equivalent) requirements, and site safety procedures. This role operates primarily during assigned production shifts and serves as the go-to safety resource for supervisors, team leaders and frontline employees.

Requirements

  • Experience in manufacturing or industrial environments (light industrial preferred).
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety principles and general safety compliance practices.
  • Strong working knowledge of PPE and basic hazard controls (engineering controls, administrative controls, safe work practices).
  • Ability to observe work, identify hazards, and communicate corrective actions clearly.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff (supervisors, operators, maintenance, management).
  • Practical understanding of common hazards in light industrial work (slips/trips/falls, pinch points, moving equipment, manual/material handling strain, electrical hazards, etc.).
  • Ability to conduct structured safety observations and use checklists consistently.
  • Clear verbal communication and coaching skills; professional, non-confrontational approach.
  • Comfort walking the floor, standing/walking for extended periods, and engaging with active operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed safety training/certifications (e.g., OSHA 10/30, CP/ASP, OSHA-related courses).
  • Experience with incident investigations, corrective action tracking, and safety audit processes.
  • Experience with hazard assessment processes (JHA/JSA, risk assessments).
  • Knowledge of lockout/tagout basics and machine safety/guarding best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine safety walkthroughs during each shift to identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and at-risk conditions.
  • Support supervisors in maintaining safe production processes and housekeeping standards.
  • Respond to safety concerns, near misses, and incidents promptly; help drive timely corrective actions.
  • Escalate urgent hazards immediately and coordinate interim controls to protect employees.
  • Assist with pre-start safety checks (PPE readiness, lockout/tagout awareness, machine guarding visibility, safety signage, etc.).
  • Ensure required documentation and training are current for assigned work areas (as applicable).
  • Assist with incident/near-miss documentation, root-cause information gathering, and action tracking.
  • Support communication of learnings from incidents to relevant teams.
  • Lead or assist with daily/weekly toolbox talks and training refreshers aligned to site priorities.
  • Reinforce safe procedures and standard work instructions for common work tasks (material handling, forklift use if applicable, LOTO awareness, working at heights if applicable, chemical handling if applicable).
  • Maintain organized safety records for the shift (walkthrough logs, hazard reports, corrective action status, inspections checklists as assigned).
  • Monitor adherence to required safety processes (PPE, reporting procedures, guarding, confined/controlled areas if applicable).
  • Participate in safety meetings and assist with implementation of action plans (e.g., corrective actions, audits, safety campaigns).
  • Identify repeat issues and recommend process improvements to reduce risk.
  • Promote a safety-first culture; coach employees and supervisors in safe work behaviors.
  • Encourage reporting of hazards and near misses without retaliation.
