About The Position

This is technical work in the conduct of risk management programs. Work involves responsibility for the identification of hazardous conditions and the investigation of injuries and accidents arising from county operations. Work also involves the development and implementation of programs designed to reduce risk exposure. Work is performed with independence in assigned areas of responsibility under the direction and supervision of a superior. Work is reviewed through conferences and evaluation of programs and activities for results obtained.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in safety management and program development.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in risk management, safety education, or training.
  • A valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and County safety requirements, including OSHA.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, principles, and practices of safety education.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of risk management and the principles of loss control and management of risk exposures common to County operations.
  • Ability to detect hazardous conditions, identify causative factors of accident and injuries, and to make sound recommendations for their correction.
  • Ability to plan, design, and implement an effective safety program.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required statistics, records, and reports using various automated systems (e.g.; MS Suite-PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint/ Word, etc.).
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with co-workers, other county departments, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required statistics, records, and reports.

Nice To Haves

  • At least two (2) years experience in planning, coordinating and implementing occupational safety and health programs.
  • Excellent coaching and communicating skills.
  • Ability to make connections across complex ideas.
  • Experience conducting inspections and safety training.
  • Experience beyond a beginner level in Google Workspace.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies needs for, plans, develops, and presents training and instructional materials for safety programs while ensuring that implemented plans are being followed.
  • Conducts formal and informal safety inspections to identify potential hazards.
  • Prepares and recommends practical solutions to eliminate hazardous conditions.
  • Advises associated departments of hazardous field working conditions; stops field operations where danger is imminent and follows up on inspections to ensure corrective action is taken.
  • Organizes and coordinates protective and safety equipment programs; schedules distribution of equipment and monitors use to ensure compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Meets with vendors and suppliers of safety equipment; recommends bid specifications and equipment selection.
  • Investigates accidents that occur onsite and identifies possible causes.
  • Maintains documentation of the County’s safety procedures, accidents, and related events.
  • Reviews accident reports to determine if corrective action should be taken to eliminate the causes of accidents.
  • Interviews employees and supervisors to gather additional information and maintain safety awareness.
  • Prepares and maintains required reports, statistics, and records.
  • Performs related work as required.
