About The Position

The Safety Assurance Manager - Battery Systems is responsible for supporting the defense and resolution of product liability claims and litigation, as well as governmental regulatory activity related to all product lines, with particular focus on lithium-ion battery systems and chargers. The role also collaborates with and supports cross-functional teams in shaping company-wide product safety standards, and driving continuous improvement, risk mitigation, and compliance initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering; Master’s Degree or equivalent advanced education preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in engineering design, development, testing, quality, or manufacturing of power tools, hand tools, outdoor products, battery packs, chargers, small electrical appliances, or related products.
  • Intimate knowledge of and experience with electrical systems for lithium-ion technology, including cell behavior, pack architecture, charging methods, and protection requirements.
  • Strong understanding of battery management systems (BMS), charger design and integration, performance of battery cell technologies, and system-level validation for lithium-ion battery-powered products.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical analysis, testing, and validation of battery systems, cells, and chargers.
  • Hands-on experience developing and executing tests plans for battery performance, charging behavior, thermal response, fault conductions, and lifecycle durability.
  • Familiarity with schematics, power electronics, and system-level electrical integration.
  • Strong knowledge of UL, IEC, UN38.3, and/or other battery-related compliance standards.
  • Hands-on experience with a wide variety of company products and advanced knowledge of materials, fire cause and origin, forensic product inspection, standards, and compliance agency testing/approvals.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Exceptional executive communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strategic vision, analytical thinking, and problem-solving ability.
  • Expertise in investigating, analyzing, and documenting product safety matters.
  • Proactive approach to promoting and ensuring product safety and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct investigations into product safety issues, ensuring timely escalation and resolution of critical matters.
  • As assigned, represent the company in applicable industry trade groups, standards committees, and governmental regulatory agencies.
  • Assist in the review of product manuals, packaging, warnings, and marketing materials for safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide guidance on safety standards for product design, testing, and quality assurance, collaborating with corporate Engineering, Quality, and business units.
  • Assist with ongoing compliance with national and international product safety regulations such as ISO, CE, UL, and industry-specific standards.
  • Supports claim and litigation management, including expert testimony, discovery responses, deposition, trial testimony, and strategic case development.
  • Travel as required for accident/fire scenes, laboratory inspections, depositions, trial preparation, and industry representation.
  • Other matters as assigned.
