About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Safety and Security Manager, this position is responsible for responding to safety and security related incidents at all DBRL facilities and providing training to DBRL staff annually. This role involves responding to day-to-day security calls, working with diverse individuals to address security issues, assisting staff with unsafe situations, and enforcing conduct policies. The specialist will also assist with internal and external investigations, monitor security cameras, document incidents, and travel to various branch locations. Prompt response to emergencies, including medical incidents, fire alarms, and security breaches, is crucial. The position requires utilizing trauma-informed practices for de-escalation and collaborating with the Community Resources Manager to direct patrons to appropriate resources. Basic first aid administration and coordination of medical responses are also part of the duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND 48 hours college credit required. Experience may substitute for college credit.
  • 1-3 years of law enforcement, security and/or emergency management experience.
  • Possession of a valid Missouri driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work evening shifts and weekends based on the needs of the library.
  • Must have a reliable form of transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience in the management and use of relevant technology and equipment.
  • non-violent confrontation training preferred.
  • Preferred certifications: Fire Fighter I and II, EMT/Paramedic, Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license.
  • First aid, CPR/AED certification and disaster response training.
  • Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to the day-to-day security calls of all library facilities.
  • Work with customers and staff in each library location to address reported security issues and incidents during all hours of operation.
  • Interact with a diverse group of individuals, both internal and external, and provide exceptional responses to security issues while ensuring an inclusive approach to security management.
  • Assist staff with unsafe situations while enforcing the Code of Conduct and acceptable use policies consistently throughout the entire library system.
  • Assist with both internal and external investigations, including those that arise from criminal acts.
  • Assist with the training for new hires and ongoing training for staff on safety and security protocols, with guidance from the Safety & Security Manager.
  • Assess training needs of contracted security officers and provide training as necessary.
  • Monitor library security camera systems and review footage as needed.
  • Document library encounters through incident reports.
  • Travel from Columbia to other branch locations as needed.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, including medical incidents, fire alarms, and security breaches.
  • Utilize trauma-informed practices to de-escalate conflicts, when possible, and provide a safe and welcoming environment for all patrons and staff.
  • When time allows, collaborate with the Community Resources Manager and practicum students to ensure patrons facing challenges are directed to appropriate resources.
  • Administer basic first aid when necessary and assist in coordinating medical responses with local emergency services.
