About The Position

Block by Block is hiring a Safety Ambassador to help make public spaces friendlier, safer, and cleaner. The role patrols an assigned zone on foot and/or by bicycle, engages with pedestrians and visitors, and provides information, assistance, and directions. The position requires the ability to ride a bicycle, a valid Texas driver's license, and a military, security, or civil service background. Experience is required, and training is provided. The role pays $23.75 per hour, with weekly pay and access to a pay advance before payday. Shifts are 6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m.

Requirements

• Must be able to ride a bicycle.
• Valid Texas driver's license required.
• Military, security, or civil service background required.
• Experience required; training will be provided.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must be able to walk or otherwise traverse, including riding a bicycle, continuously during an eight-hour shift, with two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break.
• Must be able to work outdoors in all conditions.
• Must be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to communicate and complete basic reports.

Responsibilities

• Patrol the assigned zone on foot and/or by bicycle to deter unwanted behavior and watch for suspicious activity.
• Provide information, assistance, and directions to pedestrians and visitors while maintaining a positive, professional demeanor.
• Observe unwanted behavior or criminal activity and report it to local authorities through established communication methods.
• Accurately describe persons, vehicles, and other identifying details when reporting activity.
• Firmly and courteously request compliance from people violating low-level quality-of-life rules, including restrictions related to panhandling, loitering, and disruptive behavior.
• Acknowledge and engage pedestrians with friendly greetings and provide directions and city information.
• Visit a specified number of zone businesses to share information and gather contact information.
• Complete basic daily reports of tasks performed.
