About The Position

The Safety Advisor is an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) specialist responsible for implementing and managing safety management systems across various colleges and units. This role involves overseeing incident management, conducting investigations, and leading injury prevention initiatives. Additionally, the safety advisor develops and delivers safety training programs. This position plays a key role in leading and supporting multiple safety programs and initiatives to meet or exceed regulatory compliance standards, while aligning with strategic goals. The Safety Advisor collaborates with management, contractors, and other leaders to implement health and safety systems and programs, ensuring regulatory compliance. The role involves working with stakeholders to meet legislative requirements, implement policies and procedures related to health and safety, and promote industry best practices. The Safety Advisor may work in potentially hazardous environments, such as construction sites and trades work areas, and could be required to assist with emergencies both during regular business hours and after hours.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Minimum three years' experience in health and safety, with a deep understanding of OHS standards, regulations, and legislation is required, preferably within a unionized environment and/or in a post-secondary setting
  • Proven ability to conduct investigations, communicate findings and recommendations, deliver health and safety training, and implement safety management systems
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with stakeholders
  • In-depth working knowledge of the OHS Act and relevant regulatory requirements
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Outstanding planning and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize competing tasks and manage time effectively
  • Proficient in adult training principles and their application
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive information regulated by privacy and employment laws
  • Proficient computer skills, including MS Office applications

Nice To Haves

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) designation is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Implements and maintains safety management systems across colleges and units, ensuring effective safety practices and regulatory compliance
  • Designs, develops, and delivers safety training programs to enhance awareness, compliance, and injury prevention across the university
  • Liaises with regulatory bodies, ensuring compliance with applicable health and safety legislation
  • Conducts incident investigations, prepares reports, and implements corrective measures to prevent future incidents
  • Develops, compiles, and communicates reports detailing incident and injury statistics to relevant stakeholders
  • Supports reduction of injury rates within departments and units, with emphasis on priority areas
  • Communicates effectively with stakeholders, both internally and externally, to promote safety standards and initiatives
  • Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment
  • Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement
  • Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position

Benefits

  • The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $53,091.00 - 82,954.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
