About The Position

Thyssen Mining is a full-service underground mining contractor with several projects in Canada and the US. Thyssen Mining is looking for a Safety Advisor at our McArthur River Site. Reporting to the Safety Manager, the Safety Advisor will have expert knowledge and skills in order to generate and promote a positive health and safety culture. This represents a key role in helping control occupational risk. Responsible for ensuring that all safety legislation is adhered to and policies and practices are adopted. This role will have a two week on two week off rotation.

Requirements

  • 5 years experience in Mining or Heavy Industrial construction.
  • Knowledge of legislative regulations, policies and codes as they apply to the mining industry
  • Valid NCSO/CSO or equivalent
  • Self-directed with solid organizational and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Results and action oriented
  • Display analytical and decision-making skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials common to the work site
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of displaying and promoting a “safety first culture” of Zero Harm
  • A basic understanding of Windows, Excel, and Power point programs.
  • Good organizational skills. Filing, data entry etc.
  • Physically be able to perform all job related tasks (lifting, pushing, pulling, walking on uneven ground, standing for long periods of time.
  • Have a good understanding of PPE type’s uses and limitations.
  • Be able to take directives from supervisors and leaders and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Have the ability communicate, coordinate, multi task, and shift direction in a moment’s notice.
  • Experienced in conducting formal and informal workplace inspections.
  • Aptitude to perform worksite JHAs, JSAs, JTOs, as needed.
  • Understand Hierarchy of controls.
  • Understand the concept of lowering risk to a reasonable level.
  • Must show knowledge and aptitude when working around surface and underground heavy equipment.
  • Actively participate in incident investigations. Generate and follow-up with corrective actions.
  • Be able to identify risk taker attitude within the workforce, and immediately identify to their superiors, the employees that display signs of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
  • Using current and relevant topics must be able to prepare and present safety meetings to employees, contractors and the client on the job site.
  • Recognize the importance of establishing and maintaining working relationships with the client.
  • Be a team player on all levels.
  • In order to get buy in from the workers, Safety Advisor must be able to show experience to the general work force through problem solving safety initiatives that are presented to them.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out risk assessments and considering how risks could be reduced;
  • Outline safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards;
  • Carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented;
  • Plan practical and effective methods, both preventative and remedial, of promoting health and safety and safe working practices;
  • Assist with in-house training efforts
  • Record keeping of inspections findings and producing reports that suggest improvements;
  • Keep up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all Health and Safety legislation.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with mandatory regulations;
  • Assist with evacuation drills;
  • Ensure the safe installation of equipment;
  • Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.
  • Assist as required in regular audits of operations to ensure policy and procedures are implemented and being used, and that projects are in compliance with regulations, legislation and standard operating procedures. Report findings to line and senior management for rectification of deficiencies.
  • Assist in mobilization and implementation of new projects with regard to the training of personnel.
  • Assist when possible with incident investigations and ensure recommendations are communicated effectively as per Thyssen Safety Management Plan.
  • Ensure that company policies are implemented and adhered to for areas under your control and developed where appropriate to ensure consistent performance and consistent management.
  • Maintain your qualifications in keeping with the industry requirements, keep abreast of developments and participate in committees as required to maintain the necessary industry contacts and information exchange.
  • Liaise with other departments as required to fulfill the requirements of your position.
  • Other duties as requested by your supervisor.
