About The Position

This course is designed to provide the learner with an overview and understanding of the fundamentals of data analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and their respective contributions to evidence-based decision making in the public safety sector. Topics to be covered include the contributions of GIS to crime mapping, spatial interpretation, data analysis, municipal planning, policy development, health care systems, business intelligence, paramedic deployment and planning, fire response management systems, border security planning and deployment, and military applications. Learners will be provided with the essential information required to aggregate data, build online maps, analyze data and deploy information in both a visual and text format for the use in public safety sectors via mapping projects online.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree
  • Public Administration, Public Safety, Criminology, Business, or Geography qualifications.
  • Doctorate preferred.
  • Extensive research and/or work experience in the field of public safety with a focus on geospatial analysis.
  • Certifications/experience in a Geographic Information Specialist Designation (GISP).
  • Extensive experience using the ESRI software suite, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience with and designing lab exercises for SIMSI’s Risk Terrain Modelling (RTMDx) software.
  • Experience with and designing lab exercises for ThirdEye Data’s software SAFERA 7.
  • Experience with and designing lab exercises for Microsoft Excel and/or Power BI suite software.
  • Understanding of and application capacity for OSINT tools within a geospatial and intelligence context.
  • Ability to incorporate GIS-generated materials into tactical public safety analyses and dashboards.
  • Experience in teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Previous experience in developing courses and/or teaching in an online environment.
  • Receptive to incorporating pedagogical approaches that specifically embrace online adult learners.
  • Knowledge of learning management systems (particularly Brightspace from Desire2Learn) would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver course content on GIS fundamentals in safety.
  • Develop and design lab exercises for specific software (SIMSI's Risk Terrain Modelling (RTMDx), ThirdEye Data's SAFERA 7, Microsoft Excel/Power BI).
  • Incorporate GIS-generated materials into tactical public safety analyses and dashboards.
  • Teach at the undergraduate level in an online, asynchronous environment.
  • Incorporate pedagogical approaches for online adult learners.
  • Assess student applications primarily based on the Candidate Application Form (CAF).
  • Review and consider applications under criteria established by the part-time hiring committee.
