Requirements

  • Requires an AA/AS degree (or other 2-year post high school training) with a minimum of 8 years experience in a metallurgical laboratory environment.
  • Experience cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching metallographic samples, as well as the subsequent evaluation of microstructures.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience preparing and evaluating aerospace materials (nickel and cobalt based superalloys, titanium alloys, composite materials).
  • Prior experience with PWA specifications and evaluations to MCL Manual Sections.
  • Prior experience using image analysis.
  • Prior experience with advanced microscopy (e.g. electron microscopy and EDS analysis).
  • Proficiency with Office365 applications
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and work to specialty laboratory procedures and work instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of metallurgical specimens from various parts and materials in support of source approval activities (Aftermarket, and OEM as needed).
  • Evaluation, characterization, and documentation of materials, microstructures, and conditions resulting from common repair process, particularly coating, joining (welding and brazing), conventional machining, surface enhancement, adhesive bonding, and organic material processing.
  • Development/maintenance of proficiency in the use of equipment such as cut-off tools and machines, metallographic mounting presses, and polishing equipment.
  • Handling chemical reagents required to prepare metallurgical specimens for microstructural analyses.
  • Assisting RSA and ESA engineers in coordinating specimen machining and testing.
  • Managing sample/part logistics (e.g. shipping) and ordering for the team.
